I have the TRD (Borla version) axle-back on my sedan.
At 60 mph or below I hear nothing inside the car. At 70+ mph or with the addition of passenger &/or cargo to cause extra engine load the pipe is sound quite noticeable. Not unpleasant, but you'll need to crank up the tunes a couple notches.

I might try a little experiment this weekend with a Cherry Bomb glasspack, maybe a small turbo muffler. Something short.

I'm looking to get an axle back for my 09 5 dr HB. I'm looking for something with a nice deep tone that sounds good but that won't be too loud in the cab. I'm leaning towards either the Tanabe Medallion or the Nitto from Micro Image. Will both these units fit my 09 5 dr? I would very much appreciate opinions on these units. Also a pretty big deal to me is are either of these two 100 percent stainless construction (including welds and flanges)? I live in Salt Spray Hell, USA!

Many thanks in advance!

I have a Tanabe Medalion (which I spoke briefly about in post#15), so I can only speak to it.

- yes, it will fit your '09 5dr
- yes, it is all stainless steel construction, including welds
- in cabin sound is not too loud, it is a very low tone, which does not get whiny or raspy under hard throttle.

I waited a long time to get a good deal on a used one, and it was well worth the wait.

Nitto is a very low-tone, not too loud exhaust as well.

Not sure on the other points, maybe someone else can chime in.

I can't specify the size but... the TRD axle-back bolts directly (replacing the OEM axle-back section) to the stock mid-pipe and uses all the OEM hanger points. It literally takes only one wrench/socket and 10 minutes max. to re & re.

Thanks everyone for the help in this thread. I just installed the Tanabe Medalion Touring exhaust I ordered from Micro Image (Thanks again, Garm!) and I must say it is just perfect. It's aggressive, deep AND quiet enough at the same time. You can hear it well inside the car but it's not intrusive. Exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait to do some more driving!

It's a very high quality piece and very easy to install. Fit is superb.

I'm sure the Nitto would have worked well for me too, but ultimately the state of Maine uses 95 db by SAE J-1169 as their standard and since the Tanabe was tested at under 93 db by the same standard I knew I could prove it's legality.

Thanks again, everyone!

My TRD axle-back is starting to sound louder now. It likely has close to 70,000 kl. (approx. 45,000 miles) use by now.
