Laminated automotive glass is designed to handle extremes in temperature and fast temperature transitions. There has to be some type of flaw or damage for it to crack from thermal expansion. If there is no visible chip or scratch (although a scratch would be almost impossible to identify once it becomes a crack), then it very possible that there was a flaw in the glass that eventually failed.

Yeah, that's what I figured as well...I found it highly unlikely that a windshield should crack under such circumstances. As for the repair, can I leave it wait for spring? There's no use in changing a windshield in winter with all the flying salt rocks on the highway.

If it's only through one layer, and not in your field of view, then you might as well wait for spring.
