I was wondering the same, but when you are cruising and don't need to turn much, you can hold the steering wheel near the bottom and rest your elbow there, some padding there would definitely be good for extended periods of this kind of driving.

Yes, around town theres absolutly no need for it. However, I drive 100 miles/day of uncrowded interstate so I often use the armrest.
