Custom Roof rack for Yaris Hatchback
Saw this on a blog

I can't tell if they used round tube for the cross bars. Though best for strength to weight ratio, it would be the worst for drag.
Streamline/airfoil shaped aluminum tubing is available, and the drag reduction is worth the cost. I made a rack for a Soob wagon that way, with water jet cut side plates of 3/16" aluminum plate pop riveted with stainless rivets to the roof. I cared less about resale value then structural strength! It worked great, I havn't done anything to my Yaris and probably won't, as I have other rigs ('89 All-Trac, at 30+ mpg) for "heavy" hauling, and even a clean as possible rack is draggy compared to not having one at all. |

I feel that, my gas mileage is murdered my my roof rack.
