weird thumping?
I recently bought 4 tires from Costco. They installed and balanced the tires but no alignment. After a few days, I got the bolts tightened. After driving about 200 miles after the installation, I now hear this low thumping coming from the rear of the car. Could this come from not having an alignment?

check to make sure your spare is screwed down tightly in the trunk and make sure the tire wrench isn't loose and banging around ?

Could be lug nuts not tightened.
Could be tread squirm/defective tires. Look at the tread. If its squiggles its a bad tire. Could be loose wheel weights used to balance the tires. I fell safe in saying its NOT alignment cause it started thumping AFTER they installed the tires. Good luck...tell us what you find out! |

Spare is tight. wrench is secured. I checked the lugnuts today and they all seem tight. I was thinking that maybe they weren't balanced quite right but I wasnt sure if that would cause the problem. I'm gonna go out and check the tread now.

Costco should have free balance and rotation. You can have them rebalance or rotate or both. Is it noisy at all speeds? Periodic noise or intermittent? During acceleration/braking, turning, and in a straight?

Yeah, bring them back and have them re-checked for balance issues.

I dunno, sounds like a bad tire to me. I always feel there are places to save money, but tires ain't one of them...

They balanced them when the tires were installed. I hear it at all speeds however it is quieter. Acceleration, braking, turning and straight, the sound is there all the time. I would take it to costco but I'm now at college and even if i could find a costco around here I don't have the membership card. My parents do. Looks like i might have to pay someone to check it out.

It could just be the new tires are noisy. I have some old Parada spec 2 yokohama's on my old Honda and they make SOOO much noise it's insane. Sounds like my wheel bearings are ready to explode.

Well, just because they balanced them, doesn't mean they are currently balanced! The weights used are often stick-on ones, so it's possible a small one fell off in the back. Because it's the rear suspension, you wouldn't feel it as much as the front.

So after troubleshooting for days I felt I missed something and headed to a local tire shop. I explained the issue and they took my yaris around back. 15 minutes later, the guy comes back with a screw in his hand. Apparently this is what was causing the problem. Wow. Thanks everybody for your help lol

A screw IN the tire tread?? Ouch. But that would explain it...sort of. I've had a tire in my tread, and never heard it. You must have good hearing!!

Yeah it was in the tread. I wasn't the only one who heard it though. And it was a decently large screw. Had I not had new tires I probably would have a flat.

So...they guy took the screw out of the tire? And its still holds air?
Like...how long was the screw? I mean you better check your tire pressure over the next few days to make sure you dont have a slow leak. Just because a tire is new doesnt mean it cant have a puncture. |

Yeah he took it out and gave it to me. pressure seems fine so far. I guess we'll see how it holds up.
