Yaris air filter lid

The secondary air filter stuck in the air filter lid looks pretty dirty, possibly a restriction, can you change these? Do people remove them completely? Really whats the point of it? I'm surprised I cannot find any threads on morons hacking the crap out of it without doing the proper research first, like in the honda forums, lol.

Are you talking about the carbon trap? Those aren't replaceable, you'd have to buy a new top portion of the intake box.

it's an emission control item and shouldn't be removed.

Wait, a carbon filter on the intake? Is it supposed to neutralize acidic air or something?

It's there to absorb fuel vapor that can leak out from the intake when the car is off.

I was wondering about this secondary filter as well and my 2006 Corolla had one. I removed it on the Corolla and that car seemed peppier (less air restriction). I did the same to my Yaris when I got it last year and I noticed it had the "extra" filter. Not throwing any trouble codes and I could always put it back in with some sealant. It is actually called a "screen" on the diagrams of the intake if you do a search for Toyota OEM parts.

you know.. its funny, cuz I just take my filter out also when I go to an event. After finding out I only got a +1.5whp gain out of my CAI, I took it off and just ran oem box. But for sh!ts and giggles, I take out my filter when I autocross or track.

1.5 whp may not sound like much, but it's almost a 2% gain. And mods help each other to give higher results per mod.

agreed 100%.

Off-topic:
I have no other supporting mods in that area at the time. Plan to turbo anyways so exhaust manifold and CAI are just items that i will be throwing my money away at.

I can only go by assumption on this. I have yet to dyno with/without filter. I just did the CAI.. I do it only cuz I like to think it gives me a little pep.. But honestly, I cant give you a real answer on that.
