Yaris was my first car bought new (prior cars include a 1997 Ford Escort, 2000 Ford Escort, 2002 Saturn SL2, and 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer). I'm not quite 4 years into ownership (August), and will have it for a few more years at least until it's paid off.
After that, probably something like a Hyundai Sante Fe or Mazda CX-5. At that point, we'll probably have at least one 2-legged child, possibly another on the way, and one or two 4-legged children (large dogs: wiemaraner and vizsla). So the larger vehicle will be needed to haul us all around, including luggage if we travel with the dogs at all. Most likely it'll be the CX-5, especially if they bring the diesel version over. Talking with a local dealer, Mazda is apparently trying to make the diesel version be 40-50mpg capabale, otherwise they are probably scrapping the idea. I've been told that Euro version gets upwards of that.
