when i first got my 17" rims I had massive tires on them because I got them for free...they had as much fender gap as his 20s do.
If you turn all the way one way or the other they rubbed, the fronts rubbed against the fenders if you hit a bump or pothole while driving, the rears rubbed against the plastic mudgaurd in the rear fenderwells. While it wasn't damaging to the rear tires, over every speed bump or slight dip in the road you would hear this horrible scraping sound. My advice to you is what I learned the hard way...if the tires in the front have too much of a offset and may rub on the fenders, grab yourself two flush head screws and replace the two very oversized machine screws in the front fender. the screws on my sedan were on the outer lip at about the 3 o clock position if you are looking straight at the wheel. those suckers were nasty, and my oversized tires would have lasted longer if I had gotten rid of them sooner. EDIT: your hatchback may not have the same screws my sedan did, but to be safe, look around the area where the top of the bumper ties in with the fenders sheetmetal, there may be some very large machine screws that will chew your tires up.
