mp3s use ID3 tags to store information about each song. There are a lot of different tags, but two that can mess you up are: Album Artist and Artist.
Most of the time when I would get songs that would be separated for unknown reasons I went into iTunes in and selected all of the songs on that album. Right click Properties (I think, I don't have iTunes installed on this computer) and then changed the Album Artist and Artist tags. Sometimes you have to clear out each, save then type the artist name back in and re-save, iTunes is twitchy about it for some reason. Hope that's the problem and it works out for you!
