I always found it something to chuckle about reading these threads. I just could not see a trade happening to get a Yaris, but that was of course when it was only 11-12k for a base model LB when I got mine.

I agree. The only exception I can think of (off the top of my head) would be if you are really busy, are driving a gas guzzler (or near gas guzzler), and your circumstances change. For example, one of my neighbors is an RN and was driving a Pontiac G6. She is a single homeowner. She got pregnant. She traded in the G6 on a new Fiesta that cost her about the same as the average Yaris.

Not everyone has the money (or more importantly SPACE) to keep around several vehicles. I used to always have two cars, but after my wife and I bought our current house there just isn't parking for three cars all of the time. So I went down to one vehicle, and after a gas-guzzling Mustang GT and a problem-prone 325i I was ready to trade into something new(ish) with good gas mileage and reliability. I was upside down on the BMW and ended up paying nearly 16K for a two year old Yaris...but the money I've saved in repairs and gas has more than made up for it and I plan on driving the Yaris until the wheels fall off.

A 19 year old Hyundai Excel was our "trade in". It sold in one day for $1,700 because it ran well, had no mechanical issues, and was maintained properly. The money from the sale lowered the total cash out the door cost of the 2012 down to $14,900.
