Doesn't work. As soon as you leave an extra foot of space, somebody will squeeze in.

Usually the speed limit or just under is slow enough.

see that is the thing. Everyone accelerates away from me. So by the time the person wants to cut me off, they are already 2 or 3 car lengths ahead of me. Hell, I've even driven 10 miles below the speed limit when I just didn't care and wanted to get the best gas mileage.

^^^^^This is what usually happens with me. I usually drive between 55-60 in the slow lane and they may try to cut me off, but I'm going too slow for it to be effective. Quite a few of the freeway miles around here (but not a majority) have a 60 MPH speed limit.
