Official: 2014 Accord Hybrid rated 50 MPG city (45 highway)!

Truly impressive! Makes me really want one. I already love the regular Accord but 47 MPG combined is killer.

Toyota really has to raise the bar on the next Prius if a conventionally shaped mid-size sedan can come so close to the wedge shaped fuel sipper.

Wouldn't the Toyota counterpart be the Camry Hybrid? All 3 Prius models are hatches. I do like the looks of the Accord Hybrid , and the MPG 'fits the bill'.

Yes, but I mention the Prius as the industry standard among hybrids and it is the car that sets the MPG bar. So to have a mid-size come along and challenge it is something. The Prius suddenly isn't as compelling to a lot of potential buyers when you have a conventional car like this that approaches its efficiency. Fact is, many people (not me) don't like the look of the Prius or its image/stigma and will be excited to have the option of a "regular" looking car and get the mileage they've been waiting for.

The Camry Hybrid is rated 43/39 for comparison. Toyota could've achieved the Accord's numbers but decided to make the Camry a fast and powerful hybrid. They also probably didn't want to impede on the Prius' territory either.

^^^^^ All true. More people in my general area were born out of state than any other area in Texas, so there isn't really a stigma here re the Prius, but I have noticed such in other parts of the Houston Metro and in other Metros in Texas (except Austin). I like most things about the Prius, but I'm not that fond of people who buy it (especially just to) to make a statement (and especially so in my native California). They should, IMO, buy it because they truly like how the vehicle would fit into their physical life (of course people can buy vehicles for any reason they desire).

Still waiting on pricing but Hershey is probably in the right ballpark. Hopefully it starts as low as $27K or so. Camry and Fusion Hybrid is around there.

Here's a Motorweek review of the '13 Accord , http://www.motorweek.org/reviews/roa...3_honda_accord . The long term drive is 34.8 m.p.g. with the C.V.T. . The top of the line with the V-6 is $34,000+ .

Regular Accord starts @ $21999.

Will it save you $5000 over the life of the car?

Unlike the Prius/Yaris situation its the same car.

I guess people want to get better mpg even if its costing them money. I admit I would like to roll up 50 mpg around town.

One major setback for the Accord H is the trunk. It's a tiny 8 cu ft. That's just a little more than half the size of the standard model. No family road trips in this thing. So in order to get these amazing numbers, Honda had to jam a huge battery in the back. It's too bad that there's this compromise.

I guess for overall space w/super MPG the Prius is still the winner with its hatch configuration.

just read it's starting at $29,155(not including dest). while more expensive than the camry hybrid($26ish) the mileage is much better(47 combined vs. 41). the fusion hybrid gets same mileage(or so they say...), but is a little cheaper so it's really the only comparable choice.

It's a little steeper than I'd hoped for but it will still sell. The Fusion gets no where near 47. The average reported on mpg sites is 40 combined. Ford has been notorious for overstating mpg. They fixed the C-max's rating but haven't adjusted the Fusion's. I'm confident Honda's numbers are fairly accurate.
