Well, got it off in the end. Took the starter motor off and jammed a spanner between the flywheel and the casing. As I had a 3ft half inch breaker bar on it I had it in gear with the brakes jammed on and took up some of the slack before jamming it so the flywheel and casing wern't taking all the force alone. Amazing that it still took a big heave to shift it!
On to the easy head removal now :-) Thanks again CTScott and marcus
