obviously, the folks posting here have this problem, (which is the nature of threads discussing a particular issue) but I see no evidence in the real world that yaris rust easily.

the 07 yaris I sold is 8 yrs old (from manufacture date), and has not a spec of rust. my brother has a pair of 08 sedans, and likewise not a spec.

dip1, thanks for posting the pictures. My white 2012 Yaris L has similar rust, but not as bad as yours. When I get an oil change this spring, I'll ask about warranty coverage on the rust spots.

The chrome on the front air dam is rust colored too. I need to wash it next couple of days and really look the car over. There probably is more somewhere else...

There's rust coverage that comes with the car like that of the bumper to bumper and powertrain . Should be at no cost .

dip - You are most likely still under warranty, they will fix that, whether it's replacing the body or whatever they will fix. Do it now before your warranty expires.

The corrosion warranty usually specifies "perforation" or "rust through" and Id be surprised if a cursory detailing and touch-up isnt all they do for it at this point.

Given the OP's location, (and judging from the pictures) acccumulated dirt, including what is likely "road salts", aren't helping matters.

Washing your car regularly year-round especially ones that get used in "rust belt" states where they DO salt the roads, and have dirty rain is more important in the winter months for this very reason.

I know it seems silly to wash a car when snow-ice-rain-crappy weather as much as guaranteed, but doing so is actually more a preventative measure than a cosmetic one.

The old saying "a clean car lasts longer" comes to mind.

^this. I wash my cars regularly, especially in the winter. most of my cars ive kept 10 year and 200,000 miles and always end up with very minimal rust.

In this case, it really depends on the dealer. My sedan trunk lid had similar rust.. and also under the license plate, and they repainted it under warranty.

I found rust the size of my pinky finger nail, within the back headlight area, you can't see it, unless you look real close. The rust is light brown, I believe it still can be removed. The problem is finding something that can remove the rust.

This winter has been real brutal, especially the extreme cold temps, first time in a long time I inspected most of the car, car door hinges etc. Since this rust spot is small, best to remove it while it remains small.

Any suggestions for a rust removal product ? Toyota won't do nothing on this rust spot since it's not visibly noticeable, I don't even have to ask, I know from a mechanic at the dealer.

I just wanted to followup that, during my oil change this morning, I had the service manager look at the rust spots that had formed on my 2012 Yaris L hatch. I have rust similar to the OP, but not as bad. The service manager took some pictures and will send them off to regional (?) for the okay, but he said they should be able to cover the rust repair under warranty, no problem.

As a follow up to this post, Toyota covered the sanding and repainting of my hatch this week. There was about 5 pin sized rust spots, and a lot behind the license plate. Apparently there was nothing under the chrome trim piece.
