Depends on where up north
. Where might indicate if you have to drive or not. As much as I absolutely love driving, if I had to live near NYC...and didn't leave very often... (I know, the OP lives in Canada), I might try going without owning a car (all of my previous trips to the area in the last 9 years have been car based). NYC Subway, NJ Transit, PATH trains...all reliable, and good communication with passengers re any changes (I didn't use the LIRR, nor Amtrak, during my just concluded visit). Even with the train travel, I still did quite a bit of walking.....helped re a restful night of sleep.
