New Mazda2 Official Debut

I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. The dimensions have grown but the cabin area looks roughly the same, so I am assuming the new Mazda design language is to blame for most of the additional length. Weight is up, but not substantially. Not really impressed with 113hp, especially when most of the competition is already beating that number with older tech.

I am interested to see if Toyota really does share this platform for the new Yaris or if the rumors are true that Scion will gain the Mazda2 sedan instead. I cannot see offering a Scion sedan and a Yaris hatch built on the exact same platform. That seems too redundant, even for Toyota.

The US Corolla is the Altis. But, I did read that Scion may have a rebadged Auris in the near future.

I really dig it. Hate the wheels, but really like everything else. Should be a pretty great car. Nearly everything Mazda makes drivers very well and has a little bit of Miata DNA.

Calculated the power-to-weight ratios of the old 2 and the new 2. They're nearly the same: .043 (old) vs. .047 (new). '15 Yaris is right around that, too (.045).

I like Mazda cars, but I'm not a big fan of the new sheet metal design. It's certainly unique, but somehow already looks dated when I see one on the road.

I drove the Mazda 2 and 3... and they both performed well. Upon close inspection, the 2 looked cheap and flimsy (exterior and interior) compared to the Yaris, but the driving experience exceeded the quality of the materials. The 3 seemed to be a better built car with quality materials and good fit and finish. The interior is impressive, except for that weird communication display that sits on top of the dash. The 3 was actually a remarkably nice car to drive.

Let's see if the quality of the newest 2 approaches that of the 3.

I tend to think the 2007-2011 Yaris has the cheapest, most plasticy sans the same years of Aveo, Rio, and Accent. I thought the Mazda2 interior was solid, sporty, and comfortable. While not as nice as the Fit, Fiesta, or Sonic, I think that it's better than the Yaris. My "2" cents.
