Should I Change Head Gasket?
Im going to be replacing my timing chain sometime in the next few months. The cars sitting at 134k miles and other than a noise on the belt side, probly worn chain/guides, the car runs great. Am I being overzealous by going a little farther and doing the head gasket while Im nearly there? Or am I just waisting my time and a little money?

I didn't realize changing a timing chain required so much tear down. Head gasket replacements are pretty involved so unless it is blown personally I don't see the point. Good luck

I don't even see it necessary to change the timing chain.

If you have to time and you want to now more about the engine then I'd say go for the head gasket. Since you'll have the head removed you can also clean the cams and head for any lsudge build up.
If you already know how the engine works/have no interest in it or are short on time then I'd just change the chain. I'm interested in what is making the chain so noisy as they usually last the life of the car in the 1NZ engine. I'm doing a valve job/sludge removal/head gasket on my fiancees '02 Echo and I'm not bothering with the chain as it sounds fine, I'm curious as to what kind of shape yours is in? |

A busted TC on an engine of that mileage would be highly unusual. A bad head gasket even more so.
I would have another authority confirm the chain before proceeding...

The 1NZ is a naturally noisy engine. Mine has always had taps and rattles which used to lead me to believe I had valve and chain issues. That is until I learned on this forum that these noises are normal. Had gotten used to the silence of a timing belt.

The head bolts for the Echo require a double hex bit. It looks like a T-5 Torx bit but is not. Snap-On sells the proper bit (8 mm, I think but it's best to check).
If you choose to do the head get the proper tool. I am assuming the Yaris uses the same head bolts. |

Oh what memories of keeping junkers alive during my high school days, and the times spent at Dom's.
