I think my next course of action will be to remove the door panel on one side and wire another speaker to see if it works. I think they odds of both speakers going out are astronomical, but there's always the chance.
If that doesn't work, then I will admit defeat... So, that said, how easy is it to access the door speakers in a 2008 hatch? Cheers! M2
