You know that you saw this coming...

The Toyota Yaris iA Sedan

The Toyota Corolla iM Hatchback

http://www.autoblog.com/2016/03/17/s...#slide-3531921

I bet sales of those two cars will pick up a bit more now that they have a Toyota emblem on them.

I wonder how much the 'Zoom Zoom' (Mazda2) ugly-snout Yaris iA Sedan will cannibalize sales from the boring and homely Corolla sedan, since they are pretty similar in size, and both sedans. Most people will only see the Toyota nameplate and not even realize it's a Mazda.

So, no more Yaris in it's current form, correct? The Yaris name is being rolled onto the two iA versions, right?

But......the current Yaris is a better car than at least the Auris/iM......eeeewwww....(unless the turbo 1.2 comes state side).

I will be really surprised if the 2017 Yaris Hatchback isn't a current-gen Mazda2 Hatchback, with some minor cosmetic alterations like the iA (Mazda2 Sedan). The new Mazda factory in Mexico is set-up to make the Mazda2 Sedan/Hatch and slight variations of it, and that seems like the likely $$$ decision for both Mazda/Toyota for the U.S/Canadian market, rather than deviate significantly from the Mazda2 design/platform. The latest-gen Mazda2 really isn't a bad car at all (the reviews for it are all quite good), but the horrible front-end that Toyota plastered onto it for the iA really killed it aesthetically, in my opinion.

I have a soft spot for Mazda2, it was almost my choice over the iQ. I just couldn't get over the horrible 4 speed auto in teh mazda2.

Speaking of which previous gen Mazda2s now have a pretty peppy little ECU tune jumping their horsepower with bolt-ons to in excess of 120whp. They're now able to keep up with Yari in straight lines and curves.

I'm happy to see that the Auris (Scion iM) will be marketed as a Corolla hatchback... because that's what it is. Now, if Toyota can just sell it in basic trim, we'd have a winner.

As for the Scion iA, if I want a Mazda (which I don't) I'll shop down the street at the Mazda dealership.

It wouldn't surprise me if Toyota drops the Yaris hatchback for '17 and simply proceeds with the Yaris sedan (iA). I don't know if that'd happen or not, but with the price of fuel recently, they may not see a need for two subcompacts in the lineup with the Yaris hatch is such a slow seller.

If, however, Toyota does use the Mazda2 for its Yaris hatchback, I'd be pretty happy. I love those cars, and Mazda makes cars with great driving dynamics.

Just hope that Toyota doesn't plaster the fugly iA snout onto their hatchback version of it, lol.

The huge snout on second generation Mazda 2 hatchback isn't very attractive either. So I don't think it's going to look all that hot next year as a rebranded Toyota. I surely don't have high expectations. I'm not that crazy with current Mazda designs. They are average at best, but the Miata is very attractive. And I surely wouldn't mind driving one IF it was front wheel drive. Rear wheel drive is not very good around here in the snow and I'm not the kind of guy to have more than one vehicle at a time. I already hate insuring the one I have. But that's another topic.
