IMO stick with conventional or you're just burning money. In a high mileage vehicle like yours that doesn't see freezing temps there is no benefit. Dyno oil lubricates just as well as conventional in your climate.
I do run syn oil in my Echo that has 380k km on it but that is only in the few crazy cold months during the winter since it doesn't start as smoothly as it once used to. Once the temp rise I go back to conventional. FWIW I do notice slightly more oil loss with the syn oil, and the weight is always 5w30. It burns about 1L every 1000-1500 km so I don't bother doing oil changes anymore, just the filter. You may find adding an additive like syn lube or similar helps with the oil burning. It makes a big difference in my Echo, I suppose you could also just run a heavier weight oil as well. I just find it hard to believe that this amount of oil burning just happened all of a sudden. This point to you needing to check the PCV, that said it could just be a beaten on enigne with failing rings.
