wow, some of these bolts are bad. I have assumed my '02 Echo has had an exhaust leak for a while now, it's not that bad but a small tapping sound on acceleration. I plan on changing this in a couple weeks.
Now I'm thinking I should be replacing mine in my'08 Yaris since it has 136,000 km on it. Anyone know what the bolts and gasket cost at the stealership in Ontario? Or is is it possible to get at Crappy Tire? |

Did mine today. This is 7 years/83,000mi of use on the parts. Just used a little shot of liquid wrench on the bolts. I used a 6 point 14mm socket. DON'T use a 12 point, it will hop on the bolt head and then you're in trouble. I used a long 3/8 extension and a 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter so I could use my cheap 1/2 drive torque wrench to get the leverage needed to break free these tough bolts.
Using a 3/8 ratchet handle probably wont work. I warmed the car up to get the exhaust flange hot to help get things out easier. I did NOT need a torch or flame. Both bolts cracked free with no snapped parts. I took a large/long screwdriver and carefully pried around the edges of the old doughnut gasket to get it off of the exhaust manifold. Watch not to get any bits in the downpipe! Not that bad a job IF you have experience around rusty exhaust pipes. Also, I did the whole job lying on my back while the car was on Rhino ramps. Also, the doughnut in the pic is the old one. Note how it was eroding away where it looks like its threaded. The smooth part below that is what's left of the material that can still seal the exhaust.

Indeed! So quite now! Less than 60 bucks for the gasket, 2 bolts and 1 spring (springs are 7$ each) for Toyota Gatineau. |

My doughnut gasket between manifold and pipe was leaking. Local muffler shop (Mavis Tire) for $85 replaced the bolts with springs along with the gasket

I know this is an old thread,
I have. 2016 Yaris hb, 1.5. on cold starts, I get a valve tap tap sound, car has 58000 miles. Could this be the donut gasket issue I am hearing? Ot just piston slap/ or loud valves Sent from my moto x4 using Tapatalk |

likely just the injectors, they are noisey on the 1nz. Unless this is a new noise, then it's likely something different. If it's an exhaust leak then it should be coming from the exhaust and that is easy to check but just going under the car when its running and looking or feeling for exhaust gas

Once warmed up noise stops. Your car is pretty new though.

I don't know the history of it, but it does not. Burn oil between changes . Just noisy when I start it cold. I like to let it idle a little but before driving off to avoid the ticking Sent from my moto x4 using Tapatalk |

How cold is cold in the morning? What oil weight are you running?

Right now I have Mobil 1 0w30 advance fuel economy. With a fram ultra filter. Last oil was Pennzoil synthetic 5w30 and one before that was supertech 5w30 synthetic. I would think that it's not too cold for the oil, even a 10w30 probably would be ok with these temps. Sent from my moto x4 using Tapatalk |

That's good, it probably is just how these engines sound.
It's not hard to hit 3k rpm on the cold engine. I leave my house and go up a short hill, I would not doubt the engine hits 3k Sent from my moto x4 using Tapatalk |
