When it's making the noise, remove the drive belts and restart.

I'd have to bring it to the mechanic for that - way above my knowledge of cars, unfortunately. But very encouraged that you don't think it's the timing chain. I have a morbid fear of this breaking when I'm on the motorway. Probably 150,000 miles is too soon to think about the timing chain?
