Best years to buy in Canada (hatch)
Howdy all! Trying to better understand which are the best years for the yaris here in Canada. I've been reading and understand the hatch changed from the true Yaris to a rebadged Mazda 2 but I can't seem to find out exactly what year this happened. In my mind I feel like I'd rather a true Toyota Yaris as opposed to the new Mazda version but maybe I'm just crazy?
Any thoughts? |

06-19 are the years you want for a true Toyota built Yaris. I recommend the 2012+ hatches, the interiors won't make you vomit and they drive better.

Parts are so readily available from those years now, for next to nothing. At the auto recycler. Every time I go to Pic N Save, or U-Pull there's always what I need. Love it! I never have seen any other generation for parts. As well as, they have true lay flat rear fold down seats. The newer Yaris lost that feature. Plus they are, "Made in Japan!" not France. You can import better motor swaps from around the globe. Such as a 1.4 Turbo. Are you into car audio? Radio head units are easy to upgrade. I have experience with Mazda, and they are garbage! I have absolutely nothing good to say about them, what so ever... |

I bought a 2019 hatch here in Canada back in Feb/19. It's the made-by-Toyota extremely reliable one. No regrets. Make sure it looks like a Toyota and not a Mazda and you'll be fine. I believe they stopped selling this version in 2018 in the US, however.
Personally I'd avoid the Mazda version, if I wanted a Mazda I'd buy one. |

The "3rd-gen" #2 (2015-2017) or "3rd-gen" #3 2018 SE hatch (2015-2017 or 2018-2019 for Canada) was the sweet spot (IMO) in terms of overall vehicle refinements/tweaks, since the Yaris hatch was essentially one loooong evolution & facelift of the same basic vehicle from 2006 to 2018-US/2019-CANADA. The so-called 3rd-gen (2012-2018/2019) was just a more aggressively facelifted 2nd-gen with a few more body panel changes than normally occurs in-between real generational total redesigns (such as how the real/authentic Yaris hatch for Europe & most of the rest of the world was finally completely redesigned for 2020+ with the TNGA release Yaris hatch).
I didn't want to go through the pain of tracking down a ultra-rare pre-owned 2018 Yaris SE hatch in late 2019 from across the country, so I went with the new TNGA SE Corolla sedan that I could buy locally - but I would still have rather had a 2018 Yaris SE hatch than my current Corolla - or better yet, the new TNGA Yaris hatch that was never offered here in the US/Canada. ![]() ![]()

Having owned a 2007 and 2014, I would say the 2014 was more "refined" in some (insignificant) respects, but the 2007 was an infinitely better car.
Whatever year you decide to purchase, I would suggest only an authentic Toyota built in Japan. |
