SOLVED:
I had to simply press the usual hatch-opening button at the back that is used to raise it (unlocking isn't enough, that button has to be pressed too). The reason I hadn't tried this simple, common-sense solution earlier is that my alternator wasn't working and the battery had lost charge. So the button wasn't working.
