It's probably an axle shaft. When you turn one side plunges at the inner joint. Sometimes they just start binding up. Get the car up it the air, put it in gear and get the wheels turning. Apply the brakes a bit but keep the wheels turning. If its an axle you should feel it and a really bad one will move the engine/trans side to side a bit.
