Same thing if you have a specific carrier plan you want to keep. For ex., I'm with T-Mobile right now, out of contract, and I have an old plan. In order for me to get a new smart phone and still keep my old plan (the current plans are a more expensive), I have to go out-of-pocket and pay for the phone full price. Otherwise, if I want to benefit from the discount on the phone, I have to accept a new plan (and go back on a 2-year contract). I don't think it's unique to these 2 carriers. I believe VZW does the same thing, and I'm pretty sure AT&T is even worse (but let's not even go there ). Kioshi is right. Just wait for a sale in the fall when all the "new and improved"devices come out (usually major phones come out around father's day, and again in the fall, close to the holidays). That's because there are 2 major phone conventions during the year where they announce the new phones. So the existing phones will go on sale eventually. I remember getting all P/O at T-Mo when they were having deals for "new customers" and I'm thinking what about me, where is my deal for being a loyal customer, uh? Comcast is the same way. I think that's just the way these companies do business. Last edited by tomato; 06-09-2010 at 07:42 PM. Reason: clarity |

Garm, I'm not defending them (or am I? ) I'm just saying, it is what it is.
That is actually why I have so much trouble deciding between my 2 devices actually. what the heck, why keep it a secret ... In the balance, I give you ... drum rolls ... The Nexus One, and the EVO. [insert pics here] Even before comparing the units and how they perform, let's talk carriers. The N1 is on T-Mo, a company I like to do business with because: 1) their plans are reasonable, 2) they have outstanding customer service (I can personally vouch for that, although it's well known in the industry), 3) they offer flexible, month-to-month plans, do not require you to sign a contract unless you want a subsidized phone. Negative: the network in SF is a little spotty which makes for a lesser performance, unfortunately. Not a deal breaker (I never dropped a call like folks do on AT&T all the time) but annoying because you just sit and wait for your stuff to load. And again, it depends where you are in the BAy Area. I understand the folks down in the South Bay have no problem whatsoever (maybe TMo threw an extra tower outside the Google campus or something ) EVO on Sprint. In San Francisco and in the Bay Area, Sprint's network is strong. Negatives: Sprint doesn't offer flexible plans. Sprint requires a $10/month surcharge for the EVO even if you live in an area that doesn't have 4G. Sprint requires a contract, even if you pay for the phone full price. Lastly, Sprint is not famous for their customer service - although I understand they are trying. It's hard to make the decision because it's not just between 2 phones, it's between 2 carriers as well. Now if I were to compare the units, you'd be shocked to know that in some respect, the N1 outperforms the EVO. On the other hand, you should see the pictures the EVO can take and that screen ... man, THAT is how we're supposed to surf the web on a mobile device. not to mention you can actually see the screen better in direct sunlight IMO. *sigh* Anyone got a quarter? ;) Last edited by tomato; 06-11-2010 at 03:38 PM. |

To further complicate matters, performance indoors isnt the same as outdoors.
The sprint's network s signal doesn't penetrate buildings as well as TMo's for whatever technological reason. |

Finally...
I think my cost to own on EVO-Sprint is going to be something like about $15-20 a month more than the N1 on TMo, but I need to sit down and calculate over a period of 2 years because paying for the N1 full price in order to go month-to-month also changes the CTO over 2 y. if that makes any sense. I know, I know, just pick one... |
