Ditto on the punch cards. Back when debugging was a REAL pain in the arse! Run the cards, generate the code, check the printout for bugs, re-punch the necessary cards make sure to stick them in the right order in the stack, re-run the cards... repeat.

This was from a high school COBOL class and I hated it because what I really wanted to do was get my grubby little hands on that sweet TRS-80 in the lab and geek out!

Yeah - punch cards ruled at IBM in '72 (my first REAL puter to play with. God, it was slow....)
