My housemate drives a Yaris and says she gets low 30's MPG combined. I get mid 40's combined. It's very driver-dependent and VERY location dependent. My FX-16 averages about 40 MPG here, but I remember it occasionally getting below 30 MPG in the winter in Denver.

It might be fun to have two MPG benchmarks - the current one plus a "conservative driver" benchmark that reflects those of us who aren't road ragers. Might give people a heads-up about their wasteful driving habits.

I drive conservatively, mostly town and country roads, and i've never gotten over 34 mpg. I only have 13,300 miles on it. I do have the 18" TRD rims, but that wouldn't affect it that much, would it? By the way, the sticker in my door says I have 185/60/15's on it when I actually have the 215/35/18's on it.

the 30mm wider tires are not helping your mpg.

Great Mileage

I just got 52.9mpg on my last highway trip. 60-65mph, no AC, windows cracked for airflow. Almost 20 miles, hilly, but no overall elevation gain/loss. Gotta love the Yaris.

I averaged 43.1 MPG on a 70 mile trip to work with hills. Temperature was probably around 60 degrees, so no A/C and no windows opened. I kept my average speed around 60 MPH and around 55 for the last 6 miles once I got into "city speed limit of 50 MPH with traffic lights."

Drive at or below the speed limit on the highway, no jack rabbit starts, time traffic lights and stop signs, increase tire pressure to 44 PSI, etc. I was also getting 36 MPG when I was driving mostly 70 on the highway. I picked up an Ecometer and I'm slowly increasing my lifetime average to 37.

Or, be happy with what you are getting. I consistently get between 36 and 39 (a few tanks of 40 or 41). I'm loving it! It may not be the greatest, compared to what some other people are getting. BUT, it's still a hell of a lot better than what I was getting in all my previous cars, with only slight modification to my driving style (doing around 65-70 instead of 80-85 on the highways). We're talking an increase of 10+ MPG.

I agree with all of that 100%. I filled up the other day and got my worst tank mileage ever since the first fillup when new. 32.5 MPG. All in town driving, with the air conditioning running at full blast much of the time. That's hard to complain about.

That's just hard for me to fathom, Yaris Hilton. Even in the dead of winter, with a car full of adults and snow sports equipment, with the Spikes Spiders on and doing the traffic-laden run to and from the local ski area, I still get 42 MPG.

Granted, my engine grille block helps, but still...

I doubt an engine grille block helps at all. You're probably not poking around in 25 MPH speed limits with lots of traffic lights, though. And little up and down hills where you have to put in lots of energy to climb, but have to take it all right off with the brakes, rarely benefiting from the downhill coasting. That's Bristol.

Last night I drove my Yaris with myself and my wife in it, and the trunk and back seat packed with all kinds of junk, across the Appalachians and over to the Atlantic coast driving speed limits on cruise control all the way. Mostly the speed limit was 70. Averaged over 43 MPG. Driving conditions make a huge difference.

Shoes

I found wearing certain types of shoes helps with driving. I feel like I get better milage using my Shape-ups compared to using a light weight running shoe. I usually alternate between my dress shoes and Shape-ups when driving.

How would shoes effect shoe economy?

I imagine it may have something to do with sole thickness especially when driving a manual.

I have to sometimes drive with boots on and it kinda sucks. There's no "feel" of the pedals compared with wearing a comfortable sneaker. I have to concentrate more since I can barely feel the clutch. It's harder to drive smoothly.

Which all means that you may not be able to feather the pedals for efficiency without ideal footwear.

After driving a 95 Civic for a while, any newer car for me had a more sensitive gas pedal. I can find the right amount of pressure with the heavier Shape-ups than with wearing something much lighter.
