Wondering why people complain that Yaris' cant get good mileage?!
I deliver pizzas for a living. In a pretty heavily stoplight filled area. I on average get 40mpg in town, and have gotten 48.5 on a the highway. Its a great little car! Just drive nicely and it will treat you well.
I tell people what i get and it blows them away. I dont know why. lol |

LOL! I did the same thing when I drove the car for the first time. I was stoked about the way it drove, but pissed that it only fot around 200 miles to the tank. I then figured out that it was not in the right gear, and got it back into drive. Then I noticed the difference: I lost some of the power, but gained twice as much mpg.

I usually average 40mpg maybe a bit less in the winter, any one getting much less than that either has a mechanical problem or they arent driving correctly..

I never really complained, but only inside my head! LOL! After getting only 27 MPG on my first (dealer) fill, I started to read these threads and start applying what I learned. Most of it is all about common sense driving...
Now my average is almost 45 MPG. Only 4.5 months old, I was able to get 504 miles on a tank, close to 50 MPG. I'm not doing so well now, only getting 45 MPG on my last tank. But, later this month and next month I'm taking a couple of road trips... Hopefully, I can break the 50 MPG barrier...

I never mentioned it, but my yaris is a 5 speed manual. Not an automatic as it sounds most of you have. And most of my driving in the past has been 100% city. Now im about half and half.
My current tank, i know its not completely factual but, im at 149.8 miles and the second bar hasn't dropped off. If it were to drop right now, id be at about 46mpg. Im hoping to go further before it does. EPA rated it so frickin low |

Me too! I only drive 2 miles each way to work and back. My first 2 tanks I babied it. I never accelerated hard or downshifted. I am on my third tank now and have a little harder on it. I will see if it makes a difference. And yes I have it in drive. lol.

I average 28 MPG. I drive about 25 miles to work and back everyday with about 4 miles of that in the city. I leave for work at 5 AM so traffic is not a problem. It probably doesn't help that I drive my Yaris like it's stolen.

UPDATE ON MY CURRENT TANK! CANT EVEN BELIEVE IT!
ok seriously this is all 50% mixed highway and city driving, and city driving is delivering pizza. dropped the first bar at 93 miles dropped the second at 160 miles just dropped the third at 219 miles will keep you updated on the rest of the tank, i would be blown away if i was able to hit 50mpg on mixed driving!! i am sooo close to 50mpg, i cant even believe it Oh and i drive 55-60 on the highway, with DFCO whenever i have the chance. In town i take accelerations easy, upshift at about 2500 rpm's and try to keep it constant at 40-50mph. hard to do with all the lights though, even though that means more DFCO :). |

With such a short commute (good planning on your part?) I would bicycle it year round, skipping only the snowiest, slushiest days.

Yeppers! You're close. I was at 237 mi when the third bar dropped off... got 504 miles to that tank when all was done. Unfortunately, it took 10.253 gallons to fill. Hopefully, soon I will break 50 MPG? Good luck with your MPG...
