Disable your seat belt alarm (on/off switch)*

What for:
If you want to disable your seatbelt alarm. I tend to do alot of work on/in my car and I hate the alarm when I turn the car on. So I wanted away to temp disable the alarm.

Tools Needed:
- Wire strippers/wire cutters
- Drill bit (1/4inch)
- Drill
- Elec. tape (or shrink wrap)
- 10mm socket (for removing center console)

You need to buy/have:
- switch (on/off) ($1 - $15 depends on your taste, mine was $3)
- 2.2k ohm resisters ( $0.99 radioshack) (thanks -*03Z33)

How you do it:

1. I removed the center console (check the service manual)
2. On the center side of your seat there is a small rubber "hose" with the seat-belt wire
3. Cut away some of the rubber hose, and expose the wire's
4. Seperate the wire into "2" then strip a bit of each (you could prob remove the seat and then tap into the wire alot easier... but taking the seat out sounds like a bitch)
5. Use a piece of wire (about 7inches) and attach the wire's together
6. I put a 2.2k ohm resister "in-line" on one side of the wire
7. Hook up the wire to a switch (i used a push-pull on off switch)
8. Tape all your splices (I would recommend you to use heat shrink)
9. Test, TEst, Test
10. I chose a location on my center console that was accessable but hidden (under my e-brake handle)
11. Drill hole, put switch in hole/place
12 . Put everything back together
13. Enjoy your new found ability of control over that 12sec chime....

yah but theres no fun in that...

and I didnt really want to disable it; just temp. when I'm driving down to the garbage "dump" (its on the other end of my townhouse "block") and what not.

Is it necessary to put a switch or just cutting the seatbelt sensor wire may be enought to disable it forever? It is a very annoying feature of the new Toyota (my mom also have it on her new Matrix), so I don't think people will want to re-enable it further... hehehe.

What is the point of the resistor?
because you are adding a length of wire?

my guess is that there is a resistor in the acutal buckel reciever... or somthing along that line, because when i simply "shorted" the factory wiring the alarm would not go off.

nice DIY...that is what I would be looking for as well....just a temp solution when I am detailing or have my laptop backpack on the passenger's seat....I would like to be able to still have it on because I prefer to wear my belt, but would forget all the time without the chime.

i'm just wondering... can't you just get a used seatbelt buckle latch from the junkshop and plug it in your setbelt buckle to stop the chime?

I used elect. tape but you can find heatshrink at either lowes/rad shack should have it as well

No the switch I used had "Screws brackets", if you look at the switch picture you can see the 2 wire "inputs".

you could do that, but I did this for a temp solution, not for a full time. So if your looking for a full time solution then that would prob be the easiest way.

how did you make the hole for your switch (what tool?)

a cordless drill and a wood/metal bit (I just used what i had)... the hole size depends on what button you use/get.

I just went to five different dealers, and no one will disable the dam alarm. They don't care what it says in the manuel they just won't do it. Liability issues they tell me. Any other way other then adding this switch? I'd just like to get rid of the alarm completely. Maybe a certain wire being cut?

if you want to disable the alarm completely just cut the wires (as in pic) and connect the two with a resistor. (image below) I would use heatshrink around the connection points (at min. electrical tape)

So theres no simple way of disabling the sound alarm (ie not cutting wires)? This seems like a huge pain in the ass for something so simple.

there is. Find a dealer that will do it. or me I just went to the dealer I used to work at and had one of my service guys do it for me with no one knowing.
