Tire pressure and how you drive it.

Places like NYC are notorious for providing the worst conditions for fuel economy. Any time you spend idling in traffic or at stop lights is dragging down your MPG. Every time you punch the gas in stop & go traffic is also dragging down your MPG.

The Yaris is CAPABLE of delivering great gas mileage, but it's not magic. :) You have to drive conservatively, too.

I have also found. The winter mix of gas also lowers my mileage.

And running the defroster. (It runs the air conditioning compressor.) Plus cold tires get stiff and are harder to flex, AND their pressure goes down if you forget to adjust it. All the lubricants in the drivetrain get more viscous in the cold.

Not to mention that in cold weather the engine spends more time running on an enriched mixture while warming up.

21.54??? That must be a new record low posted on this forum... I don't even know what I have to do to get below 30 mpg...

Driving in Brooklyn is REAL city driving. You're not going to do as well in that kind of slow, stop-and-go driving as most of us do in our different local conditions. Doesn't necessarily mean anything's wrong with your car.

take a trip on your day off and drive 200 or so miles on the highway. Keep your speed below 70-75. Your mpg's should instantly jump up to mid 30's. Be sure to fill the tank before you leave tho, so you can have fairly accurate guage of your mpg's.

Yep, temperature and winter fuel make a big difference. When I lived in Colorado I remember my Corolla dropping from combined 32 to near 25 MPG in the winter. Now I'm in Hawai'i and average 40+ all year long.

If all you do is drive in that borough, and rarely see a highway, then you will NEVER see 30mpg.

Your average will be 25.

I live in queens and have been driving mixed Bronx/Brooklyn/manhattan/lots of highway on the LIE, and only when I have lets say 50% higherway then 50% "city", then I hit 30-33mpg.

But remember we live in a densely populated area, and especially you with probably a stop sign every 150feet. So you cant complain about it, its 100% normal. Stop and go is a killer for gas, never forget that. Especially sitting at all the lights.

Why in the world would anyone just up and go and do this for no reason?

Doing that anywhere within 70 miles of brooklyn, doing 70-75mph, will get you a very nice speeding ticket + points.

Where we live, its impossible to see a good driving day except for mid-day and maybe weekends. Thats it.

Totally agree with this. Weather makes a huge difference and as it is now super cold in Illinois, I'm getting shitty MPG. =(

summer time I get 48-55mpg on my drive to work.
Lately due to the 30-40F weather it has been around 38-42mpg

TODAY was 15F outside... had to idle the car while I was scraping the windshield, mpg was only 32! Luckily this cold front is only supposed to last a few days... by the end of the week we should be back in the 30's-40's.
