Thanks for sharing, John! This looks like an interesting mod for sure.

Just a few questions:

1. It seems that you used a 1ZZ-FE ECU. Do you know if 1NZ ECUs also have 2 crystals?
2. Does this procedure affect anything other than the RPM limit?
3. Do you know where to get that magnum regulator?

1. I don't know how many crystals are inside the 1nz ECU. An automatic transmission ECU may be different from a manual transmission ECU as well.
2. When I raised the clock speed beyond a certain point on the 1nz MR2 the idle became rough and the car would not restart. Also at that point the door locks on the MR2 would cycle after I pulled the key from the ignition. I reduced the clock speed a little bit from that point and all was well.
3. I purchased the unit directly from the Magnum Tuning website.

What is the maximum safe RPM limit for the 1nz-fe? I vaguely remember reading that the yaris RPM limit is less than what should be safe, but I can't remember the reason.

My guess is you'd need different cams to take advantage of the limit change? Also, is there any ecu's from other cars that you could swap into the yaris? I know we used to do this back when I messed with obd1 Hondas, I hadn't thought to try something like this in the yaris but it makes sense.

I think Jason ran up to 7000 on stock everything. Stock is 6250. I am at 7300 with upgraded springs only. Our new spring kit would let me go to 8000.

My car n/a though, even with bolt-on mods, stopped making power about 5800 (thus the stock rev limit, most likely). No reason to rev higher unless a dyno shows that you're making power up there and would benefit.

Our Runoffs race setup is 7300rpm with stock springs and JUN cams - previously ran 7300rpm with the stock cams as well - most of the year we turn it down to 7100rpm.

Might try some MI spring this next season and see if the car will make power past 7300rpm. The dyno indicates there is more up there, we just have not wanted to push the valve train or crank that hard yet. Now that I have a spare engine I am willing to push it a little harder.

As I mentioned in post 7, changing the clock frequency could cause a variety of problems, including communication problems between the ECM and the other ECUs, or could cause much more catastrophic issues, like runaway conditions.

Our ECM has both microcontrollers clocked with 16 MHz crystals, but I would consider this a dangerous mod, as everything else timing-wise for the ECM is also based off that frequency.

A much simpler and safer method would be to use the module that I created for allowing us to use metric instrument cluster (and have the speedometer and odometer increment in MPH). The tach feed to the ECM is the same type of pulsed signal as the speed signal, so theoretically the same method would work for fooling the ECM about RPMs. Here's a video of the speedometer device in action:

What sensor is used for RPM, if it's the same as the crank then you can't mess with it or your timming will also be screwed along with injection.

Without modifying the 6,600 RPM constant in the firmware, any modification to the limit will require manual adjustment of the maps via a piggyback.

I have a stock 1nz-FE in my european T-sport model and the rev limit is 7500 rpm in 4th and 5th.
Stock.
So that's quite a lot, my bmw racecar runs 7300 max.

1st through 3rd the limiter is at 6500 by the way.

(I don't even know yet where the ecu is located in the yaris p1, lol. I've only had it for 4 months and it's my road car)

Your ECU is under the glove box i remember.
