If you have an aftermarket deck then no, you shouldn't need an external amp. You should also be able to get away with not using a crossover for 1 set but personally, I would put them in the back as your not going to hear the highs as well as you would if you put them in the front. If you only have one set and no crossovers, I would look into getting some because that would really make a difference in the sound quality.

Isn't the RMS some what high for a stock HU? I heard it's also bad to stray away from the RMS in either direction.

i believe that the 50 watts rms on the stock deck is total power. its like 12.5 rms per speaker. upgrade your deck before your speakers.

upgrade both.
A good quality speaker is useless without something nice to drive it. A good quality amp is useless unless it is going somewhere nice. You have a somewhat nice set of speakers here. At least get a decent head unit to drive them. If you'd like to get crazy, get a crappy headunit and a nice amp to drive these. |

You need to run them with the crossover, or the tweeters will be destroyed right away from the midrange frequencies.
If you really need to use them without the crossover, you can just hook up the woofers and not the tweeters.(this would be fine for the back speakers, for example.) |

run the crossovers...its best for the speakers...
P.S. the speakers wont sound as good with the stock head unit, but I have yet to see a pair of speakers destroyed from putting a higher watt RMS aftermarket speaker on a factory deck. just don't crank it till they clip. if you hear distortion, turn it down, and you wont blow the speakers or the head unit. pretty simple concept really.

There’s a lot of good points that have been mentioned here. Take a look at it from this point of view…
Should you use a component set over the stock system? Yes, in most cases. That being said, should you use an aftermarket deck to power the fore mentioned component set? Sure, depending on your needs for the system. The next logical question would be will the component set sound better when run off deck power or amplifier power? Depending on the amplifier, most definitely. Think about the last sentence for a second. Do I use the deck’s claimed 50 Watts x 4 or an amplifier’s 50 Watts by 4? Take a look at the difference: Here’s a reputable Amplifier that runs 45 Watts x 4: ![]() …and of course I can’t find a picture of a deck amplifier board. Given that, you can use your imagination. The entire deck isn’t a 1/3 as big as the 45 x 4 amplifier seen above. Grossly oversimplifying this, there’s a reason why a huge percentage of the SQ competitors use tuners as sources versus powered CD player sources. It sure as heck isn’t because the deck amplifier’s 50 or whatever Watts sound good. Am I coming off as too snobby by saying all this? I sure hope not.

Thanks everyone for your input , i installed the above component speakers at the weekend , and it is a diffenant improvement over the speakers that was there , the next step will be to run it all through an amp or 2 , Of which i have never used or done before , but there's a first time for everything , so off do read some more post to work it out |
