Distracted Drivers

My home town has a ton of one way streets. So it's not surprising that the streets have odd turn lanes.

I was waiting at a light in the straight through lane, with a right turn only lane on my left hand side. Above me in the intersection was "No Left Hand Turn" sign, with the left hand pointing arrow with the red circle around it.

As the light changed I noticed in the rear view mirror a champagne colored SUV (Think it was a Ford Exploder) coming through fast, way too fast, to make the right turn.

She wasn't making the turn.... she blew through the right hand turn only lane and kept on going.

Fortunately I was more mindful, tapped the brakes and waited. She barreled on down the street. I was coming home from work and had a collored shirt, shined boots and was annoyed but not angry.

She got stopped at a light. I pulled up behind her, parked the car and bailed out. As I approached her from the side I watched her hands, which were on the wheel. I closed up just behind the door to prevent her from hitting me with it, and gave her my best Eddie Haskell smile. I noticed that she had her hands on the wheel so I kept my distance, not giving her the ability to make a quick draw on me. When people have to turn their heads this restricts their breathing and blood flow to the head, giving them mild problems with reaction.

With all of this in mind I opened up the floor for discussion....

"Did you know that you blew through a right hand turn only lane and almost side swiped me?"

She said, "I thought you were making a left hand turn..... sorry".

"Please be more careful", I said as she pulled away, an evil grin on my face.

At least she had the class to apologize. I got back in my car and went home.

The moral of the story being - the one who notices what is going on around them doesn't get hit as often. The one doesn't know what's going on has quiet strangers approaching their driver's side doors with unhappy thoughts and polite demeanors.
