Fan setting to neutral (not hot or cold) defog?

I've seen before that the yaris when is on defog the A/C compressor fan is on? even when the A/C button is not being pushed? does that use more gas than normal, as in like same as A/C on? Also what about the A/C refrigerants, will they use that so it runs our and needs recharge earlier even if the air is not even cold?

Yes, if you set the controls to Defog, the a/c will run. They, Toyota figures it will help to dry out the cabin so the fog doesn't occur.

Actually works. In an older car, turn to cold, full blast a/c and you will find that the window clears up much faster than hot air to the windshield vents.

Yes, A/C is on even if you did not have the button pressed if you have the vents to Defog. Yes it affects MPG. Yes, uses the refrigerant, how much? probably very slight compared to when you really need it.

The A/C system is a sealed circulation system. Running the A/C (or defrost) does NOT use up the refrigerant. The system only needs to be recharged if there is a leak or an A/C component is replaced. So no worries about that.

Aside from drying the air, another reason that's done is that the compressor needs to be run now and then, to keep it lubricated and the seals moist with lube.
