195/50/16 or 205/40/17?
I'm having a very difficult time deciding on which rim size to go with (16 or 17), along with the tire size. I like the idea of the 16" and tire size keeping it 23.7 on the speed sensor reading, but the 17" one is only 23.5, not a big deal. What are the pros and cons of each size? I really wouldn't mind the 17"s but just not sure if I'd encounter rubbing while turning or not, 205 seems like a pretty wide size.

People run 205's on a 15. But why would you want heavier wheels?

^Some 16's actually weigh around the same as stock 15's.
To detroiter: Depends on what your plans are for new wheels and tires. 16's are lighter than 17's so they shouldn't significantly hurt your MPG. At the same they run tires don't have low enough of a profile, which causes tire roll to limit your cornering ability. These are good for tight-budgeted daily drivers who are also weekend track warriors. 17's definitely look better, but they're heavy. Plus-side you get to run lower profile tires for better cornering, though they're not as pothole friendly. As a daily driver it would be good idea to have a stiffer suspension setup with no more than a 1" lowering. This should help reduce rubbing issues. I'm planning on 16's myself by end of this year so I can run all-season 205/50's during our frequently changing weather.

Would 205/55 be bad on stock 15" rims? Seems a little too wide and tall to me but who knows, I could be wrong.

It might throw-off your speedometer a little, but you be fine if you don't mind that otherwise

You could probably get away with it, but it'd prolly mess with the speedo a bit. Not sure what the overall circumference change would be, lemme see if i can find that tool.
lol... i type slowly... http://1010tires.com/TireSizeCalcula...?action=submit Found it. The speedo change would only be .55% slower. That is .4 mph at 60.

AS an owner of 17's w/ 215-40-17 tires, I'd actually recommend the 16's. You've got a bit more tire to work with, so sizing is more flexible. Definitely better for weight, too. If I were to replace my wheels, I'd go 16.
I have a 1.1" drop w/ NF210's, and I rub a bit on big dips and under full-lock turning. the only size I can find smaller than mine are 205/45/17's. that's my 2 cents. |

I have 205-45 17. Dotz Las Vegas. No rubbing or nothing. But the rims are really heavy for the car ,steering is much heavier. Then on higher speed and cornering car feels really solid.
Changed to winter now 185-65 15. Can turn steering wheel with one finger now. So for next season I shall drop these Dotz and go for some lighter 17s. |
