Getting About 36mpg
I finally calc'd my mileage, and found that I am getting right around 36mpg. One thing is, we don't normally drive highway miles, and spend most of our time driving around town or on short trips.

Auto or manual? I ask because I have an auto and larger, wider wheels (17"), and I'm getting about that mileage with average driving...
Those bigger wheels do reduce gas mileage a bit! Cheers! M2

I have the 3dr with a manual and started out at 36 - 38 and steadily crept up to 44 avg now.
The things that made the biggest difference for me: 1. Tire pressure (at least make sure they are inflated to the door placard value) 2. ScanGuage (instant MPG and tach functions) 3. Practice on the commuting route. (look for downslopes, stop lights versus stop signs) Taking your foot 1-2 notches off the gas if not completely off, makes a difference on a route that you know well. Coasting up to major stops, or on any downslope can become a habit if you pay attention to it for a month or so. I also use 0W Mobil 1, but I can't judge if that helped more than 1 Mpg. Same goes for a Shark Fin antenna and K & N Filter. A cheap $15 solar battery charger seems to make 1.5-2.0Mpg difference parked in the sun for 9+ hours. (not logical, but definitely repeatable, and a better value than the antenna or filter) |

Mine is a 2010 3 door hatch with auto. I drove over 300 miles today, and got 33.25mpg. I'm a happy camper.

Are you using engine glides? Deceleration Fuel Cutoff (DFCO), and any other FE techniques for the Yaris? Cheers!

DFCO is a mechanism that shuts off fuel to the engine during deceleration. You can read more about it here.
As for engine gliding and other fuel efficiency tactics, take a gander in the Fuel Economy forum (where this thread is posted). We've got some serious hypermilers (folks who want to squeeze out as much as they can out of every drop of gas they use) in that that forum, but others argue that those techniques can cause problems by holding up traffic in certain circumstances. It's your decision to try to employ any of them, I for one will try to use DFCO when I can by downshifting my transmission (remember, it's an automatic); but as for hypergliding and what not, I can't be bothered as my 35 MPG average is good enough for me, especially considering the larger wheels I have on my hatch! Cheers! M2

at 18000 miles with the manual tranny, I get an average of 35 mpg. Highway only is allot higher. I don't beat it, but I don't try to hyper mile either

I get 38 averaging 75 mph on the high way and that is with roof rack and surfboard, Ac on or Off I found makes very little difference if any,
I am quite happy with that. |

I am amazed that you get those mileages with those speeds. That's awesome, and now I won't have to get onto my wife for wasting gas with her lead foot!

Our Yaris loves going fast. It is more about how you go fast, then the actual speed, to get the good gas mileage. The FE forum has great tips to get crazy good gas mileage.

I'm not seeing how a solar battery charger can make a difference. What is it charging?
