08 hatch vs. deer
well, i found out the hard way that my Yaris doesn't like deer. i was moving along I-45 the other morning on my way to work when out of the darkness comes a buck. then....
....insurance company estimated about 6k in damage. i'm just surprised that it held up so well.

yeah that was my first thought about the mirror. that is usually the first thing to go.
the door will open from the inside only. the linkage was broke for the outside handle.

Damn, those Texas deer, while smaller than ones up north, still do a helluva lot of damage, don't they?
We've got them (I call 'em "doggy deer") all over SA, and I always fear them jumping out in front of my Yaris as I am always taking back roads in the Hill Country. I've had some close calls on my motorcycles but so far no real scares in Sprocket. Glad to see you're OK, unfortunately while the Yaris is a safe car it isn't a cheap one to repair. Maybe you can take advantage of the situation and get some more mods done, like an aftermarket hood from Garm! Cheers! M2

i was only doing about 60mph. the deer i hit was probably about 180lbs. i see them all the time on my way to work but i guess i was the unlucky person to catch one. lol. i have been thinking about some more mods but it will probably have to wait until i can get her out of the oilfield.

I leave for work at 12:30 am every day and am more worried about drunks than deer.

no, just once. it hit right at the front and swung around to the side. you can see where it slid off the quarter panel.

Sorry to see all of your damage but I'm glad that you came through without any injuries.
It's deer hunting season here in Northern Minnesota! I like the idea of thinning the herd and cutting back on the number of potential hits during the winter. I work for a trucking company and every time one of our trucks hits a deer it ranges from $300 for a bumper to $10,000 for a new fiberglass hood and any other hidden damage. Every time I see another dead deer tied to the top of someones vehicle and heading down the road, it give me a warm fuzzy feeling and a bit of a smile! |

thanks. yeah, all the truckers down here where i work always come in and tell me they hit something. one driver just told me today that he hit a cow last night in his truck. lol. i'm out in the woods pretty much at my job so seeing them prance around is a normal occurrence. i just heard back from Toyota that it will be ready by mid next week. a lot faster than i thought.

A few weeks ago I flew commercial into Detroit to pick up my '08 Yaris, a nephew had delivered it for me to the long term parking lot at the airport. So, at 2:00 AM, I finally see my "new" Yaris for the first time, find the key left on top the tire, fire it up and start heading back to Idaho.
40 Minutes later, at 70 MPH, I go whizzing by a LARGE buck with a huge rack standing all regal like in the middle of the interstate. All I could think was "less then an hour and damn near totaled it!" Last edited by Idahotom; 11-13-2010 at 09:54 AM. |

Ouch , sorry yo see that . What is with YARIS and deer ? The 3 doors seem to be targeted more than the sedans . Hope , all else goes well for you and that your fine . I've hit a few deer in my days . Gets the blood pumpin' . Tore off the rear leg of a doe one morning when it went under the front passenger side of a '82 PLYMOUTH 3 door Champ . Felt terrible , the leg was dangling by a thread of skin and had to push it onto the other side of the road into a ditch while still alive . That way no else would hit it . Stopped off to a convenience store and told the state police of what happened . Asked if I wanted it , said no . The bumper and fender had little damage , few dents . The deer going under the car tore a hole in the C.V. joint , which was replaced next day . It's hell for both parties .

@idahotom- yeah thats kinda how i felt. i've been driving the same route for the past 2 years twice a day and when i hit it all i could think about was out of all the times i come through here one finally caught me.
@Hershey- wow. all of the truckers around here asked me if i picked it up. at the time i hit it i didnt know what was going on. just a brown blur then no headlights. thankfully the airbag didnt go off or i probably would have ended up in the ditch. i had just enough time to kind of tighten up on the steering wheel. @Bailout- haha. its still on the side of the road. i've been wanting to get the rack so bad. maybe i should get them and mount them to the hood when i get the yaris back. lol.

Like you said , I traveled the same way every morning ( 3:30 > 4:00 A.M. ) for 7 days a week in over 7 years . You get to know where the deer like to cross . Sometimes the hardway . Wish you better days ahead .

Nuts. You shoulda claimed the deer to eat it as revenge for what it did to your ride. Glad to hear you're ok.
