October Subcompact Sales

Here's a link to my monthly "subcompact sales" chart.

FYI, the Yaris didn't fare so hot in October: Down 36% from 10/2009 (down -37% YTD).

Sales numbers among sub-compacts continue to not make a whole lot of sense.

Aveo, the worst piece of crap in the auto industry, experiencing skyrocketing sales as it ages? Is GM having fire sales on these things?? The Aveo ranks lowest in just about every category. How can people make such an uneducated purchase decision? And outselling the Yaris more than 2:1? Come on.

And the Versa continues to fly off shelves. Maybe that's why the new Yaris looks more like it? Too bad. I swear, too many people are blind.

Still a bit surprised that the Soul is now the class sales leader. However, I really don't consider it as part of the regular sub-compact class though. Technically, it is a compact crossover. Just as the new Nissan Juke is. Both of these cars have raised suspensions. The Nissan Cube is also borderline in fitting within this class.

I have an e-mail into GM for comment regarding the Aveo's amazing sales as of late. I had one for a rental last week, and frankly, I don't get it.

I don't get it with the Aveo either. Ever since I got my Yaris in June, I've seen tons of new Aveos being driven around town. Probably 10 times as many hatchback models as the 4 door. You couldn't pay me to own an Aveo, I had one as a rental car 2 years ago and I couldn't wait to get home to my 12 year old Chevy Cavalier - I hated it that much. I guess the Aveo drivers are all ignorant.

Now am wondering what body style of the aveo is selling the best. Is it the hatchback or the sedan?

I see a pretty even mix on the road.

When I rented one this past year, I felt like I was in a tin can. It was awful.

I could see if they were all selling new for like $9,999, but they're not.

We're in a recession. $$$ (or lack of) talks. When I was looking, I saw the ads for Aveos, Versas, etc. But none of them interested me since I am not a price shopper and they really felt/looked cheap and/or ugly. Just based on my own experience, historically, Toyota has never been competitive price-wise. Quality, feel, and value have usually been enough to convince people to pay the extra amount. But with this recession, traditional Toyota selling points may not be enough.

Toyota still might be suffering from the recall of other models.

I see a lot of 4 door Aveos around these parts, go figure.

A few days ago in USA TODAY I read a blurb on the Ford Fiesta, flat out stating it was the first non hybrid gas engine car to achieve 40 mpg This was an auto writer stating this, not official Ford gospel.

Well, not counting the Smart FourTwo (not a real car ) or diesels, the Fiesta is the first non-hybrid to achieve an EPA highway rating of 40 mpg (equipped with the 6-speed auto) in the US market.

USA Today is correct short of those technicalities.

No way.

Many of us have driven the Aveo. I rented one for a week and it couldn't even compare to the Yaris in the slightest.

i had a base yaris sedan in auto....it was even more of a dog and still had a sloppy suspension.

face it: regardless of the car, a bottom-of-the-line vehicle from ANY manufacturer is going to suck.

i like our aveo sedan. we use it as the family car. its good and comfy on the highway and i prefer the seat to the oem yaris seat. don't get me wrong its not a mercedes....

Yeah, I'll agree with you on that.

I drove a rental 2009 Aveo 4 door for a 200 mile road trip. Flat terrain, never over 70 MPH, no A/C on, with just 2 people in it. It got only 28 MPG. And the seats sucked. Got home and priced it out with the options it had on it only because I was curious what this piece of shit sold for and the thing retailed for over $17K.

I'd much rather have a Japanese-made car than one made in Korea.

I also got only about 27 mpg during a week long rental in a 2010 Aveo. Same conditions that I get 38-40 mpg in my Yaris. This is a car that is slower than the Yaris yet also feels less substantial (very tin car feeling). And the Aveo couldn't take corners to save its life.

What do you get for MPG in your Aveo compared to your Yaris? Just curious.

I forgot about the Aveo's bad cornering....I just wanted to put that car out of my mind for good. And the reason I didn't go over 70 MPH with it is it just didn't feel safe.

Love the Yaris' cornering characteristics, and I don't even have the rear sway bar yet.

yaris i get about 7.0L/100km city and 6.5L/100km highway....07 3dr, manual, no a/c, no options. intake, header, res-back exhaust

aveo sedan i get about 9.5L/100km city and 7.5L/100km highway....06 4dr sedan, no a/c, no options. k&n drop-in filter.

aveo weighs about 200-250lbs more than the yaris.

the aveo has the older e-tec engine, not the newer ecotec w/ vvt

but both cars are paid off, so neither is going anywhere soon

Don't know what that means.
