Permanent Roof Rack

Is the Yaris LB 3-door roof strong enough for a permanent roof rack? I mean the type you have to drill holes, like Yakima. I want to attach a basket for a 5-gallon jerry can and some luggage. And I just hate the dirty look of clip-ons.

Like this Yakima on a Honda Fit

Definitely. Under the black strips on the roof is a double layer of sheet metal.

Check out the collapsible 5 gallon fuel bags at http://www.akbushwheel.com/index.php...cart&Itemid=58 Pricey but worth it as they empty super quick and then take no room.

I wouldn't ruin any car by doing that.

Where the one in the thread is mounted is definitely just to the single layer of the roof. It is actually quite a bit stronger than you'd think, and the rail-type roof racks actually stiffen the sheet metal quite a bit.

I did some hydraulic ram body work on Crashy recently. (I was trying to get the passenger side of the car from the A pillar to the C pillar back up to where it started, so I can mount a plexi windshield for plowing this year.) I was amazed as to how much force was required to get the large dents (>10" diameter by >3" deep) to pop back up.
