Bike rack
I had a trunk rack that I used on my sedan. I will need to get a new rack what rack do you use on your sedan?

used to have a yakima roof-top kit: 4x q-towers, 2x 48" crossbars, 2x q96 fit clip, 2x q8 fit clip, 1x 48" yakima fairing. also, i had 1x thule peloton bike tray that mounted to it.
now, i'm going with a hitch-mount system for various reasons(see below): 1x draw-tite 28502 invisi-hitch, 1x draw-tite 28451 drawbar kit adapter, 1x reese 72802 2" hitch ball, 1x swagman 64095 2 bike ball-mount bike rack. i like the current set-up better because it's behind the vehicle vs. on top which helps with fuel economy and ease of loading/unloading bikes. also, when i'm not using it the entire system easily disconnects from my car and fits nicely in the trunk(another reason sedans win over liftbacks  )! finally, you need to make sure you always remember there are bikes up there with the roof top set-up or you might do like me and drive into your garage with them still up there - ouch(why i'm now going hitch mount)!!! |

^i also have plans for a small trailer down the road! yes, the hitch mount is extremely easy to put on/take off. it's really just one steel pin that locks the trailer hitch to your bike rack!
the only drawback i see with the hitch mount vs. a trunk mount is the cost. you can find a very good quality trunk mount for around $100. to go hitch mount you will need the trailer hitch(~$100) AND the rack itself(~$70). if you have plans to tow a small trailer anyways later on it's a no-brainer, but be prepared to spend another $50 or so on a ball mount, 1 7/8 or 2" hitch ball, and some kind of wiring set-up if you plan to take it on the road(the trailer that is, nothing else is necessary for just a bike rack). don't think i'm trying to discourage you! i'm very pleased with my current set-up and i'll try to post some pics up this weekend if i get the time. |

I have the LB, but I love my Swagman XC2 hitch rack (bought in 2005?). I've used it on 3 previous cars before I got the Yaris.
They've made some very worthwhile improvements on this rack over the years like the bend on hitch bar to raise the entire rack (would have been useful for when I had my EVO with low ground clearance) and the adapter so you can use it with 1.25" and 2" hitches. Mine has none of these features. It's also $112 shipped from Amazon. I paid more for mine. http://www.amazon.com/Swagman-Cross-...0705336&sr=8-1 Here's mine: |

I have the yakima roof system too. I thought about getting a hitch mount for awhile, but I decided I really like the looks of a sedan with a roof rack. Also, a hitch rack holds the bikes where they can get coated in dust or whatever else the car is kicking up. My friend has a hitch rack on his Xterra. On one of our trips we got caught in a snowstorm and our bikes got coated in the grey/brown/black road ice. It just about ruined my bike's disk brakes.

Thanks
Thanks for your input. I now think that a hitch rack will be better and having a little trailer will inprove my car's utily
