Yaris hatchback vs Sedan weight difference etc.....

Hi,

Just wondering is there a difference in weight etc between the yaris sedan and hatchback also called Vitz (hatchback) and Belta (sedan) here. Out here in our part of the world there is a general perception that the Sedan is underpowered due to the boot space and hence a heavier and extra load on the engine both of which are 1000 cc 1KR FE. Btw....both cars have the same engine specs here in the 1,000 cc category i.e. the 1KR FE engine. There are also 1300 cc variants too.

However, I have driven and owned both cars (hatch and sedan 1,000 cc engine) and found no difference in the pick and drive whatsoever. In fact I find the sedan mre responsive and powerful.

Surprisingly I have noted that both the cars have a curb weight of 990 kg

Anyone else care to add some info / experience they have using either of these wonderful vehicles?

Tyrone

I've never driven a Yaris sedan. I've never felt that my Yaris hatchback is underpowered....perhaps partially because of the manual transmission. I had a Suzuki Swift with a manual transmission before the Yaris and I always felt I could get enough power from downshifting. We don't have a choice of engines for the Yaris here in the U.S. (1.5 L only), and the sedan hasn't been available for individual cutomers since the 2010 model year (if I'm not mistaken). I widh we had engine choices. I'd go for the 1.0 if it meant a 10% bump in MPG, but that size engine hasn't been enormously popular in the U.S. in the past.

Since I've never driven anything other than the Sedan I don't know either. Believe you mentioned the Hatchback has more power.

I'd hate to be driving these little Go-Carts full speed and run into an 18 wheeler. It would be like a bug hitting my car.

Lol...what versions do you guys have there. Here we have the 1.0L, 1.3L in both sedan and hatch back. The hatchback also has an RS version 1.5L

Just the 1.5L in the USA.

The Sedan is slightly heavier than the Hatchback, but it's more aerodynamic and has a longer wheelbase than the hatchback. Performance is roughly the same with either. Sedan might be a bit better on the freeway; at least the ride is.

Drove both & the sedan felt more stable at higher speeds.
So this would make sense.

I have a 2008 sedan with 85000 miles and a 2011 5-door with 14000 miles. My sedan handles better than my 5-door.

There's so many variables though. They would need to have the same tires+pressure, alignment, same suspension wear, same amount of gas in the tank, etc. to get an accurate comparison between the different chassis.

I drive sedan, so can't comment on HB.
I assume, HB is light (than sedan) so it should give better MPG?

I would take 1.0 over 1.5 any day... even it give 0 to 60 in 20s...
Yaris is not a fast car to start with..

This topic was discussed back when I first got my sedan. Then, Toyota listed the sedan as a few kg lighter than the sedan. Cannot recall the exact amount but it wasn't significant.

I compared the 2010 models. IIRC, the sedan is about 100 lbs. more than a hatch, but the sedan is more aerodynamic and gets a little better MPG.

I've got the AT and find the throttle too damn touchy. I've driven all kinds of vehicles but find my damn yaris the hardest to control the throttle. It was a month of learning to get used to it.

Yikes, no way. Before the Yaris, I had a Golf with the 2.0, and I'm missing that half liter very much.
