trade in value WTF moment

thought about trading in my car to get a pony but after the test drive they only offered me 5k for it and then said that if i put it back to stock that they would give me 500 more, lol

need less to say, the deal fell through about there.

That sounds about right unless you have one less than 3 years old. They can only sell it for 6 or 7k if they are lucky.

Dealer offered me 5,500 so I said HELL NO literally out loud lol and told him not taking less then $7k so he called his mgr and we talked on how his gotta make money out of it too and blah blah. So I said you know what I'll hold on this purchase till I can sell it to a private party and sure enough 4 days later boom sold it. With some what moded.

My 07 sedan had 58,XXX MILES half highway and half city something close.

So don't do it man you can get way more then that

most dealers I deal with around here will give a fair KBB trade value. most 5 year old cars well taken care of will fall into the very good or good condition category. mods will normally hurt the trade value. lots of mods even more so. un-modded they were at $5500, so not super far off.

this is all from KBB:

trade for a 2009 base model hatch with manual transmission and 75000 miles in "very good" condition is right at $6500.

very good condition defined as the following:
•Has had minor paint touch-up and/or bodywork
•Requires minimal reconditioning
•The engine compartment is clean and free of leaks
•Is free of rust
•The body and interior have minimal signs of wear or visible defects
•Wheels are flawless
•All tires match and have 75% or more of tread remaining
•Has a clean title history and will pass a safety and smog inspection
•Most service records are available

That might be what they would give an unmodded car. But still I highly doubt it. Private party will always give you more money. And trying to trade in a car as modified as yours is always a bad idea, no dealer really wants it, and very few people are willing to believe the previous owner didn't beat the hell out of it as it sits on a dealers lot somewhere.

+1 Agree

No dealer wants a modded car and even private sale here we stay away because of that exact reason you mention.

Besides, you'll always get less then you want as a trade in at a dealer, they need to make money selling it otherwise it's not worth the trouble.

they probably would go closer to the $6800 mark un-modded. I doubt they believed the OP would really bring the car back to oem status.

no, they said if i want back to OEM they would add 500 to it, still not worth the effort.

After getting rear ended this last winter I had one of the guys in the used car department at Fred Haas Toyota plug the mileage, etc into their NADA feed to get a figure. I wanted to see if the damage would = a total re the value. The trade in value in the lowest condition was about $1,600.00...and that included a mileage penalty that was a fair amount over $2,000.00. The damage estimate was about $700.00, but they found more damage and the other driver's insurance company paid about $1,100.00.

i guess I am saying they just threw that number out there and as a vague gesture and didn't really think you would really do all that. un-modded, there would sure to be a dealer somewhere that would go at least $6500.

now, don't be offended by this as it may not apply to you, but most of the heavily modded cars I see are often in much less than average condition, for whatever reason...ususally just hard driven cars.

If I knew how to do a lot of my own work (as Trini, yaris9876, and Mazilla do among 400k+ owners) I might think about keeping my 'nookandcrannycar' as an only car to 400k or maybe even 500k. I don't know how to a lot of my own work, so that scenario doesn't make much sense for me. Which new Yaris I get (5-speed 2014 L or 5-speed 2014 SE) will probably depend on what is available later this summer and where those cars are located. If I get an SE, I might keep my current Yaris.

Of course you have a car with over 200k miles, you live in Houston!

I thought I was hot stuff because I have a 96 tacoma with 335k...

Yep. People who don't live here might scratch their heads re how fast miles can accumulate here, but we understand. My next door neighbor has a 96 Civic with almost 290k on it. His grown son bought it new (while living in Sugar Land....and he still lives there...my neighbor lived in northern New Jersey at the time). When the mileage hit 100k, my neighbor bought the car from his son (my neighbor was living in Sugar Land or Richmond at the time). My neighbor's son owns an auction house (mainly for construction equipment (IIRC) and is a workaholic). My neighbor retired before he moved to Houston. Yarisworld member trini_per4mance, IIRC, has put on all of the over 500k miles on his Yaris within the state of Florida. I think all of the nearly 290k miles my neighbor and his son have put on that Civic have been within the Houston Metro.
