Diesel Yaris

Europe as is well known for being diesel car friendly. Many smart Euros own diesel engine cars for their longevity and supposedly cheap operating costs.

Well maybe they weren't as smart as they thought.

Theres pretty bad pollution in many European countries and the experts are laying it squarely on the diesel propelled cars. Here in Philly once or twice a year we do have bad pollution warnings in the weather forecast however there is no visible smog ever.

Not so in Paris.

Diesel fuel is only about 30 cents a gallon more here in NJ after maybe 15 years of being as much as 30% more. But its still more and that combined with the higher purchase price makes owning one not the economic proposition it once was...

I guess we dodged a bullet on that one.

I read the other day that the environmental pollution in China is the equivalent of smoking 21 cigarettes each day.

Diesel cars are good for more than just fuel efficiency. Their higher torque makes them a better vehicle for hauling gear in a small car up hills all while keeping the fuel guzzling to a minimum.

Driving out to Quebec through the mountains for a mountain bike race with 2 bikes a cooler and suitcase was a lot for my Hyundai that I had at the time with a 1.6L engine. A diesel would've been the perfect option for me.

I look forward to the day a reliable company like Toyota comes out with a diesel engine in Canada. You are correct about the purchase prices though, i'm not a fan of the premium

put a turbo on any engine and you'll have lots of torque, it doesn't have to be diesel.

i'd be interested in a small car diesel like the Yaris not a big vehicle like a truck. As far as i've seen there is no such option from Toyota yet.

Adding a turbo doesn't give you the low end efficient torque a diesel does. Look at Ford's brutal eco boost engine, the fuel efficiency numbers are horrendous and way under the posted amount. A diesel engine will always offer better torque with less fuel use then a gasoline based engine due to its inherent design. They are also generally more durable than a turbo engine as they have higher compression and are built heavier to compensate.

I'd rather hit the power band lower in th rpm's then higher up. Driving on a highway is fun when the tach is only at 1500rpm' vs the typical 3000 seen on a small 1.5L gasoline.

Wow. Makes me think about how unfortunate that is for children, and reminds me about reading somewhere that supermodel turned humanitarian and filmmaker Christy Turlington Burns smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day from age 13 until age 26...and at age 31 was diagnosed with Emphysema.

I think if I want that 6th star Im gonna have to drive to AK again...maybe in winter.

Hey diesel fuel is very nearly the same price here in NJ as gas now. $2.05 for gas $2.25 for diesel. Hast been that close in years. When I was driving my 240D in the 90s diesel was 79 cents and gas 99.

Yeah its not just cancer you get from ciggies. Plenty of other things too!

Sam's Club gas is 2.59 here in western S Dakota, everywhere else is $2.77. We are getting ripped.

The "experts" are morons. Europe's exhaust laws are nuts, and to blame it on cars is a communist enslavement propaganda tool and nothing more.

Cars only make a small portion of environmental pollution, and europe's other eco laws are no where near as strong as the US's.

For some reason, this makes me think about a comment Obama made. He complimented the government in China for 'being very good at controlling their people/citizenry' .

That's the most scary thing I have ever heard him say. I guess he is a fan of Tienanmen square.

He thinks people who don't agree with him on things like gun control, Iran, and global warming are idiots.

Its his way or the highway.

The scariest things Ive heard him says are about Putin:

"Doesn't he know the cold war ended 20 years ago?"

and ISIS:

"Theyre the JV team."

Of yeah and his take on the Trayvon Martin thing was pretty nuts too. I wonder if he realizes Zimmerman was innocent and he made a big mistake not getting the facts before he said what he did?
