Y'know, I was actually thinking about this last night. I wanna' run for President. The current system sucks, and it's not gonna' change because the people that are responsible for making the rules actually like things the way they are. When is the last time anyone, Left or Right, honestly had faith in the Government? We all know deep down that the whole lot of them is corrupt. That's why voter turnout is so low... not so much because we're lazy (though we are), but because we're jaded.
Here's my platform in a nutshell. Crazy, probably inherently faulty, but it's what I'd like to see happen in the future. Government: Political parties should be disbanded. Every elected official should worry only about the needs of their constituents, not what their peers want. More matters should be voted upon by the people. If the matter at hand has no effect on the politicians constituents, he/she should do their homework and search their heart for their own beliefs, vote accordingly, without trying to further someone else's agenda for personal gain. Gifts of ANY KIND should be prohibited. I'm not really up to snuff on how all this works, but I'm sure with a good committee we could get it straightened out. Foreign Affairs: The US needs to get its nose out of everyone else's business. If a country requests aid, we'll look into it, but no more voluntary policing. The UN needs teeth, and America should do everything it can to get them off their ass so WE don't shoulder all the responsibility. If a terrorist organization or another country takes a shot at the US or at a country we are openly protecting, they should immediately be ground to dust... no questions, no survivors, period. Yes, it's brutal and inhumane, and after one or two good examples, those causing trouble will get the picture: "Don't start nuthin', won't be nuthin'." Foreign Trade: I'm sick to death of seeing "Made in China". I want to see an America that doesn't have to depend on every other piss-poor country in the world just so the average Joe can make ends meet. When our own businesses have to move overseas to be competitive, yet foreign countries move here to cut costs, something is seriously out of balance. I want America to be self sufficient. I want America to be competitive on its own soil. I don't know how to do it, but I bet there are people out there that do. Immigration: Borders should be locked up tight. Illegal aliens should be given a chance to register, sign up the proper way, and then be sent back to their country of origin to wait their turn. Any aliens found that did not register should be shipped back and NEVER granted access. Should they again be discovered on American soil, they should be prosecuted harshly. Don't get me wrong... I've worked with many, many illegal aliens in the past, and they're a great bunch of people for the most part, but exploiting this country's freedoms is a slap in the face to all Americans, including those that went through the proper channels to join us. Impatience is hardly an excuse to break the law, and should not be rewarded. Abortion: If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, talks like a duck, most likely, it's a duck. If you can look at a fetus and tell it's human, it is. And killing a human is murder, and murder most heinous when it's an innocent, defenseless child. Makes sense to me. Yes, women should have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies, and that decision should be to not get pregnant in the first place. Irresponsibility is no excuse for murder. Accidents happen, but that's the risk you take, now isn't it? Morning after pills: I'm all for 'em. The only exception to these rules should be in cases of rape, incest, and underage pregnancy. Stem Cell Research: All for it. It's utterly ridiculous to deny people cures for their afflictions on the grounds that someone "could" clone a human, or the insane idea that allowing stem cell research will lead to higher abortion rates. Stem cells can be found in numerous locations, particularly in the placenta of healthy new babies that routinely get tossed into the biohazard waste bin or turned into frikkin' shampoo. Honestly, I'm not quite sure where the fear of cloning comes from. If you're so insecure in your religious beliefs that you can't deal with real-world science, well, that sounds like a personal problem. Gay Marriage: Why not? I've pondered this time and again, and I have this to say to the religious conservatives: other people's relationships are none of your damn business. If they can find a church that is willing to accept them, more power to 'em. No, I don't agree with the lifestyle, and I certainly don't understand it, but it's not for me to judge, nor is it for you to judge. It's between them and God. Leave it be. Environmental Issues: Is global warming a reality? Probably. Are we to blame? Eh, maybe. Not sure how humans are responsible for the current temperature increases on all the other planets in the solar system, or why carbon dioxide levels historically increase AFTER warming periods when you break the graphs down small enough, but I'm sure we're not helping the situation any. I'm all for alternative fuels. Big Oil has had their hand in the cookie jar for far too long... it's time for some real competition. Recycling should be mandatory. What else? Those are the only issues I can think of at the moment. So who's with me!? ![]() ~YR EDIT: PS: Yeah, you're right about closing that. The craziness that could have ensued never even crossed my mind. I was just thinking about that stuff last night, then I read the "I'm fighting terrorism" thread in General Discussion and got entirely too inspired. My bad there.
