Do and Don't Thread
Ok, this is a post where I hope the more inexperienced can get answers from those with more time/experience in the Yaris.
My first few questions are about mostly gas mileage related but that "Gas Mileage" post is way too bloated to even try posting there. What should I DO given the following situation: A. Given the following facts: Driving slower (to a point) increases gas mileage. Moderate drafting (please no safety debate) increases gas mileage. Would it be better to go 50-60 alone or to increase speed to 70 or slightly more to gain a draft off of a transfer truck (18 wheeler)? B. Is there a difference in running the AC at a lower fan speed compared to higher temperature (more red on the circular dial) compared to turning the AC on for a while then off for a while? Or is the compressor doing the same amount of work in all three situations? C. Does the front window defogger use the AC? (I.e hurt gas mileage) It sure seems cooler that ambient temp. to me. D. At what speed should (the rare times I use AC) I roll up the windows and turn on the AC? E. Will those window visor addons (by weather tech I think) help lower wind resistance when traveling with the windows cracked or open? F. Will a cold air intake improve MPG? G. Has anyone has experience with the TSB (I think thats what it was called) with the reverse noise in a manual tranny? WHIRRZZZZZZZ while backing up is common in my Yaris. Should I avoid the following behavior: H. In rolling hills, where coasting downhill is possible, but it is obvious that I will need to climb the next hill with at least some pressure on the accelerator... should I just forgo coasting down the hill and maintain constant pressure on the gas pedal the entire time (down and up the hill)? I. When engine braking, the revs on the motor (obviously) increase noticeably for a few moments. Is this bad for the motor/tranny? I heard for some cars (Mazda Miata (spelling?)) that you are not supposed to down shift through the gears while slowing down. My father told me when I learned to drive a standard that down shifting through the gears was good for the piston rings and also keeps you in the right gear in case you need to accelerate quickly. J. I've heard from others about "lugging out" a transmission by running it in too high a gear/too low a speed combination. The reference was to ATVs. I seem to be doing this in the yaris at times to avoid downshifting/increase mileage. I do NOT attempt to drastically accelerate while in a high gear (example 5th gear at 40 mph or so). Is this a "Don't"? Why? OK OK, I'm done for now... let me know what you think about these topics. Opinions are encouraged, facts and/or plenty of experience is highly preferred. |

Ahhhh, you got to much time on your hands. Just drive the Yaris like an adult and you will get approximately 42 MPG like I do on my interstate 50 mile round trip/commute.
May the force of MPG be with you Luke Skywalker. |

You don't have to post on the gas mileage thread....you just have to read it! 95% of your questions are answered there....if one of your questions aren't then post. You asked enough questions to fill a book....the book's in front of you (the thread!).

Just drive ot like you normally would. I have had my Yaris for over a year and it has over 30,000 miles on it and I get the same gas mileage and it dirves like I just rolled off the lot. As for the drafting and stuff those people are called hypermilers. I believe we have a member on here somewhere.

A. Tough call, but I would say 50 -60 MPH would give better mileage.
B. No difference. If your AC light is on, the compressor is running regardless of where your temp dial is pointed. C. Yes. Defrost uses the AC to dehumidify the air. Even if your AC light is off, if your defrost is on, your compressor is running. D. 30-35 MPH. (open to debate) E. Probably not. F. Not noticably, but perhaps a bit. G. Can't help you here. H. Just drive normal. I. Your Yaris is made to engine brake. In fact the Auto. will downshift automatically if you depress the brake on a hill. It will not harm anything provided your not causing it to rev excessively. J. You don't lug out a tranny, you lug out an engine, and yes, too low of RPM's is bad and may lead to engine damage. |

Churp: I'll give the mileage thread a shot I guess. Needle in a haystack anyone?
PetersRed: Awesome reply, exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the candor. Blacksan: Second tank (first after I put in synthetic) gave me approx 43 mpg. And thats without proper (max sidewall) tire inflation. It's not the end of the world and I'm not stressing 24/7 about the topics, but I would like to know what others are doing/think about them (Ie. Peter's reply). thanks all D |

yeah a whirring whining noise in reverse in a manual is absolutely normal, as the gearbox is using straight-cut gears. there is a TSB for a rattling noise in the automatic in reverse, that is apparently just due to a loose cable.

@ Black Yaris: I've driven quite a few manual transmission vehicles but they were mostly small trucks and a few smaller sportier 2 seater cars. I have heard something similar to this in the cars but in the trucks I don't remember hearing anything like it at all.
Just the fact that it seems much more pronounced in the Yaris (perhaps because it is the first NEW car I've driven) added to the fact that I had heard some talk of a TSB on transmission noise made me wonder if I needed to place the strategic "zip-tie" fix I've heard about... |
