Just a few questions (and it is out of pure ignorance) why did you space your hood up? Is it functional? Maybe keep under hood temps lower? Do you just like the look?
Also, what does it mean that you gutted the rear?

Yes the hood spacer theoretically should increase the aerodynamics pushing the air over the top of the car and yes they should help vent air to the environment and decrease the temps under the hood. Whether or not those things actually happen or whether or not the effects would be noticeable on a daily driven N/A Yaris, I dont know. But I like how they look. I have been debating removing them to go the "cleaner" route.
Gutted means I have removed my rear seats, plastic moldings, belts, brackets, and anything else I could lose weight removing. Kept the spare though.
ok, that makes sense (the gutted part). I prefer the cleaner look but know that people spend a lot of money on heat extractor hoods to get rid of the heat. if you can achieve a similar effect for a fraction of the cost...good deal.

The effectiveness of hood spacers is yet to be proven. There was a link on MI to a Honda forum where a guy did pretty good testing, and proved it actually makes internal engine bay temps worse.
My understanding of what happens is, with the pressure zone at the bottom of the windscreen, it pushes air in from the back of the hood. At the same time, there's air coming in from the front of the grill. This results in the opposing air pressures meeting in the middle around the engine, and not allowing the warm air to escape as efficiently.
You'd be better off with a vented hood or scoop to allow more air coming in, or more room to get out.
The worst side effect is that everyone and their uncle thinks I have collision damage and I hear almost daily that I need to fix it, what happened, or someone telling me they can fix it.

Odd how you don't get water in your engine bay with those spacers. On a OEM hood set up, I get water in my engine bay from just washing my car o_O
I think its been more luck than anything, if water/rain comes in at just the right angle it could make it in but I haven't had any issues yet. I had Hood spacers on my SI coupe and nothing happened on that car either.

very nice, are the coilovers in the rear fully maxed out? Is the last pick the standard megan 9" spring?
The last pic is of the front so those are 200mm/6kg
Yes the rears are fully maxed out + removed locking collars + removed silver base perch
You can see why I am trying to further customize to get more drop, it is slight but there is a midget's finger worth of gap.
The rear in both first pics has been swapped back to the 190mm/3kg because with the added weight of my rear seats going back in, it actually gave me slightly more of a drop than the 170mm/7kg

i know what you mean about the spring..spoke to jeff at microimage today and he told me the coilovers you and i have are the 3rd revision..i guess the first kits came with 50mm springs:eek:
True.

dont you guys think that stiffer springs in the rear would make for a sketchy ride being that the liftback is so light? and most of the weight is in the front?
I have stiffer springs in the rear and yes sometimes it may cause some teetor tottering back and forth but ride comfort and quality does have to be sacrificed slightly for super lowness
wildmongoose26
11-18-2012, 12:45 AM
You can call it easy way out but we have been ridding this low for 3+ years. And we just want the ability to air up to get in and out of places or into them for that matter.
+ showing kinda need the edge of bigger mods.
Air ride being one of them.

Kaotic Lazagna
11-18-2012, 01:27 AM
I don't think air is easy. Takes more work finding the right fittings and brackets (if going custom). Plus, a good amount of VIP cars use air (some being OEM), so it does win points for show.
wildmongoose26
11-18-2012, 12:29 PM
There arent any Toyota's that I know of with factory air, so obviously a "custom" setup does get some attention. Exp on a car that they dont see modified that often anyway.
I think that is what gets us most of our attention, its something people don't see all the time
all I can say is not all of us going to every car show to show our car and compete.
for me, The Yaris as the DD, the air sus is another way to low and raise the car in a matter of second. Im really happy with the Tanabe pro sustec im using right now, for the ride quality is close or maybe up to par to my KW3 sus I had on my other car in the past....only thing is that tanabe is not low as I want it to be without removing the help collar adjuster.
cost wise , $2k+ plus labor for a good brand such as KW, Silk Road, or maybe bilstein for the coilover , but for the air sus , it'll be at least $3K installed .... I know for a fact since I've been asking around and almost had a sponsorship from one of the air sus vendor.
I never had an aftermarket airsus before, but both of my other cars has them came from the factory ....ride is super smooth, but a little " boat effect" like ...as a matter of fact, I'll be replacing them with KW coils next summer on one of them.
happy modding ! that's all the matter :P
ps: Phil when are you going to get those XXR535 ? lol

DAMN that is low.. gezus christopher.. Are you gonna keep that camber at 0 or gonna go negative something alot?
In the rear I can go slightly lower still with no rubbing issues. I actually have some 130mm/6kg springs coming for that lol. I also am trying to get some rear hub spacers which would bring me to 16x8 +5. When I get those in I prolly will add some shims or just pull the fenders a little more.
In the front I am running 16x8 + 15 + 3mm spacer = +12. I am running -1.2 degrees of camber in front.
CWAYZEEE!! lol
i just dialed my front camber back to 0 , since I need all the traction for the winter, took my 15mm spacers...believe it or not with the -2.8 camber front, and with the additional spacer , it look about the same as it is now ( 0 camber and no spacer )

Dude I love the stretched tire look but whats the down low on how to make that happen? Tire sizes, rim size and all. I want that look and a wider tire stance on my car, the more tire coverage the better the grip. Any one wanna school me on that? You guys know you wanna...
Tyrestretch.com the first number is the width of wheel the second number tire width in mm the third number is tire profile and the last is the wheel diameter (id of tire) pick which looks good based on what wheel you plan on going with.

I usually start with style or size I'm looking for and then find everything available in that size. Then I just search Google til I find the best price and always double check with MI to see if they can match. Id rather pay a few extra bucks shipping from Cali to give them the business. Waiting for parts blows... I am so impatient
So I am trying to fit these monster xxrs on my car and the rears fit pretty well but the front is giving some issues. The inner clearance is around 1-2mm from wheel to shock body but I have plenty of room on the outside between the tire and fender. Another point of issue is the front bumper lip that raps around into the wheel well. From this point my next steps are
1. cuting some of my front bumper lip and relocating that bracket or removing it altogether.
2. adding my spacers back to give me more space between the inner part of wheel and shock body
3. add more negative camber for any other outside clearance issues now that there will be more spacing between the wheel and suspension.
Anyway on to pics...

49521
49522
49523
49524
49525
49526
49527
So went back out and did some cutting. The wheel now clears the bumper area in question so with some more negative camber it shouldnt rub that much. Need to just cut some more of the plastic bumper bracket plus there is like this metal shroud that I'm going to trim so I don't rupture a tire on larger bumps. Other than that ive got lots of fender clearance and I can fully turn the wheel to either side without rubbing.
I love this game!
Benedict
01-10-2013, 08:30 PM
Cut that portion of the front bumper. More negative camber. More low. And pull the fenders a tad.
If you have 1-2mm clearance from inner lip to the coilover you'll need to space it out a little to gain any negative camber. You may need to use two eccentric camber bolts up front. With one in the top hole I max out around -2*.
HANZO_187

Yes spacers are going in so I have room for more camber. Bumper is pretty good now. I will lower it as soon as I get more camber. I'm hoping to squeeze out another
1 degree out of my current bolts. Which is my goal tomorrow.

What tire model and size are you running? What spring rates?
Getting tight fitment on 17's will leave you with more ground clearance than weak fitment on 15's and 16's. That's why I chose 17's for my car.
It's neat seeing you work with the 17x9.75's. I considered them but bitched out because I didn't want to run that much camber on my daily.

Yea dude trying to get a little more clearance. They have settled quite a bit now

I'm running Fallen 512s in 215/40 which is one of the best stretching tires out there just unfortunate they no longer make them, I got a wicked steal from a guy who didn't know what he had. My springs are 200/6kg front and 130/6kg rear. I went with the 17s for ground clearance as well, and because on a sedan nothing smaller than 17 looks right 15s and 16s look like baby wheels. I used to be running those 16s and I was .9" from the earth. So low I couldn't fit my stock scissor Jack between the ground and pinch weld lol.
Lol I appreciate you recognizing the effort required for ~10" wheels all around. I've been toying with the idea of running 205/40s up front but that is soooooo aggressive for a DD.
Benedict
01-12-2013, 05:50 AM
205/40 federal 595's are a fat tire and fit 9.75's easily. Fender clearance will be totally different. Yokohama S drives come in 215/35/17. There is a pic of them on 9.75's on tyrestretch.com. I sent a PM to the owner (don't remember what forum) but she ran them briefly and didnt have any more pictures. I was leaning towards these before going into 8.25 bitch mode.
Edit:
http://tyrestretch.com/9.75_215_35_R17/
Google found 215/35/17
Falken fk452 $126 NLMotoring
Hankook h105 $111
Yokohama S drive $115
I'm surprised at your current clearance on only 6/6k's. to go lower and get the fitment tighter you'll probably need to go with stiffer spring rates.
I had been Googling and checking tyrestretch for a while and I see other people running 205 on this wheel but its still a hella stretch and I drive like 25 miles a day through some kinda shotty roads. I know if I went with that setup I would have tons more clearance tho.
I love s drives as a tire but those things are so damn fat their 215 prolly fits more like a 225. I've run 3kg, 6kg, and 7kg in the rear and these 6s are my favorite thus far. Idk what to do, my bitch mode is kicking in too lol

Have you considered slotting your top strut hole?
Best non-perverted one-liner question yet.
Have you considered slotting your top strut hole?
That would give me more camber adjustability but that would cause me to rub the strut housing unless I run the spacers. I'm thinking if I can just find a better tire stretch I will solve any clearing issues there. Especially since one of the only alignment shops in my area who installs camber bolts couldn't do mine properly. I don't know if I trust them to do that.
Benedict
01-13-2013, 10:15 PM
I doubt you will find a tire that is physically smaller than your 215/40 512's that will seat properly.
Federal 595 205/40's are labeled smaller but in reality are larger than what you have now. Other than the possibility of finding a 215/35 that works you're pretty much out of options. Falken 912's may be an alternative to the 512's though. So it's pretty much up to alignment and fender work to get the fitment you want.
I'm pretty confident that these will fit perfect (to my eye) with double front camber bolts, rear camber shims, a slight pull, and going another half inch to one inch lower.
Well I pulled the trigger on some 05/40s so they should be here Thursday. This will be the largest stretch I've ever tries but if people are out there dd'ing 205s on 10"s then I should be fine. I always keep a close eye on my car so I think ill be fine. But I didn't almost finish shaving down the front and pulled the fenders more.

What brand and model tire did you buy?
Remember, when stretching tires and every mm counts you can not go by tire sizing alone if you are comparing multiple brands. Tire sizing and treads wear ratings are NOT standardized industry wide. A 255/35/18 FEDERAL is wider than a 265/35/18 Falken, and a 205/40/17 FEDERAL is wider than a 215/xx/17 Falken.
Yea I'm deff aware of the tire differences I always use s drives as a prime example. I just for kicks measured the contact patch only of my 175/50 s drives and that alone measures ~ 190mm lol
I knew federales run gordo too and I've had great success with nankangs stretching but nsii are hard to get stateside you can usually only find NsI or ns20 and I hear bad things about those to stretch. I have had good experience with falken so I picked up a set of 912s and I think that is gonna work out perfectly. Should help me get lower as well which is more of a concern to me than the fender/bumper clearance. If I was fine with my current ride height I would keep the 215s.
And if I have to daily my car on some super baller stretch so be it lol

Awesome. I hope the 912's work out. I'm looking forward to seeing this lower.
FYI I just found pics on tyrestretch of 205/40/17 Achilles ATR sport on a 17x9.75 so they are an option (and only $50 each from onlinetires)
Yeah I saw that one before too and I've seen those tires a lot recently. There are quite a few cheap tires in my sizes so its good to know I've got plenty of replacement market.
Since I got new tires for my fronts I already have a replacement pair for the rears.
This is old but here is some local coverage i got. Shout out to C12Productions and I Love Driving Slow

Definitely too much gap for me. Needs to be lower or upsize the wheels. That's why I'm looking forward to the new 17's.
Can you post a close up of your front Toyota badge?
yeah I lowered a lil more after those pics and then I was at my lowest, dragging frame all over town. Now my 17s gave me a ton more clearance and filled my wheel wells out a ton so I am still working on them so I can go a little lower but here is an update til then

I been thinkin hard on what size wheels i wanna go with and what I wanna do to my car and also it being a daily driver and shiit. I know some might say 16's might seem small but I'm probly gonna settle with 16x9 XXR rims with either the Banana spoke rims or the other retro/oldschool lookin rims cause I just like the flavor. I'm lookin into getting HOPEFULLY used coilovers but its gonna be a gamble on it but worth it.
I'm glad you made this build thread cause its helped be a HELL of alot.

16x9 gonna look funny IMO.
1.5 - gotta get you a better camera to take some sexier shots!
@Hanzo im glad you find it helpful. Used coilovers are hard to find, I tried a while back and couldnt find any. 16s look ok on the sedan but 17s are where it's at imo. I would go with 16x9 for some super low though. It's a nice size to find tires for stretching and it will give you good poke in a large offset range. Banana spoke is played out to me.

I have them completely seperated and the centers going out to Rotiform for the redrill, then I need to sell my lips, pickup some deeper lips, sell my old worn out bolts, pick up some new spike ones, send those off to be plated, powdercoat the centers once they come back from Rotiform, and reassemble everything lol
It's just a lot of work and money, just the redrill/lips/bolts without any plating or powdercoatng is running about $1100... and I think I may also pick up wider barrels.

Went to get my exhaust fab'd yesterday to prepare for my S/C. Went to a local shop, Mad Hatter Exhaust, and had them fab me a cat back 2.25" ID straight pipe, no resonator, with a custom boso inspired tip. Wanted to go headerback but they said unless I trailer in the car it is not legal. The work came out great and I am extremely happy with the final product. The sound is very deep and throaty, even more so than my trd and you can hear the gases passing down the entire under carriage. High up in the power band it sounds very mean but still throaty and not raspy at all. The power increase is very noticeable and it pulls really hard now. Cant wait to add the blower on top. Dont expect any dyno until the boost is done.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/Mistabigstuff19/IMG_20130507_185138_zpsb89e2238.jpg
Running into some problems during install. I am so uneducated when it comes to wiring and need some one to help point me in the right direction.
I am trying to install my AEM wideband A/F gauge and am able to get it wired up and running but I think I am doing it wrong as I am reading extremely lean and getting CEL's.
I was under the impression that the stock a/f sensor would be pulled and replaced with the AEM. However the AEM then would only plug from the sensor into the gauge and then the gauge into a power/ground source. I believe this is causing the lean/cel issue as the ecu is no longer receiving a signal from the sensor. I have been told that I most likely need to have a seperate bung welded on that I can have the AEM wired to and leave the current stock one in place. Is this correct?
This is what my setup looks like.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/Mistabigstuff19/IMG_20130508_104319_zpsce9070de.jpg (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/Mistabigstuff19/media/IMG_20130508_104319_zpsce9070de.jpg.html)

I also have an aem fic with a custom harness that I am going to install so can I just wire the gauge to the piggyback or is the stock sensor not going to provide the accurate readings for the AEM wideband?
This video shows how the gauge keeps searching and records a very lean mixture
http://s23.photobucket.com/user/Mistabigstuff19/media/VID_20130508_113235_zps3b675928.mp4.html
you need the stock one in place so when you tune the FIC you can get the right readings. the car will not run right without it in there.
So I unplug the battery, remove the aem equipment, put the stock a/f sensor back, plug the battery back in, and now its stalling and bogging down and idling extremely low but there is no CEL?

Are you sure you don't have a vacuum/exhaust leak? Also, give the ecu a few minutes to relearn short term fuel trims when you reconnect the battery.
Assuming a stock fuel system, the car will run normally (maybe slightly lean, and will throw a P0031 code) with the front O2 sensor removed.
How are you planning on tuning? Open or closed loop?
I never had any leak before and I'm still NA this was to prepare for my s/c. When the front sensor was replaced with the aem yes it gave me that lean code. Now that everything is back to stock there is no code but that sputtering and stalling. Can I drive it like that? Will the ecu relearn with the car off or does the ignition need to be on?
Focus_Sh1ft
05-08-2013, 11:26 PM
The car needs to be running to receive feedback from the O2 sensors. You could try driving the car as is and seeing if it corrects itself, but I'm doubtful.
Do you have a code reader? Being able to read the fuel trims would be pretty beneficial also. Since you're planning on installing a Blitz, I'd recommend x10000000 to go out and buy an OBDII scanner.
I do have one that's how I've been reading the codes this far but again there is no CEL anymore the car is just sputtering, bogging, and stalling. It sounds like I just cammed it lol If it needs to be on then I guess I'm gonna go through my morning commute and hope that does the trick. Ill see what readings I get for a/f now.

Try disconnecting everything again. disconnect the battery and ecu just for shits and giggles. take a shower and come back. double check your connections. plug it back in. go make a sandwich, or wait 5 mins. then start the car again. just let it idle for 10-15 mins. Drive it around the block. drive it easy, dont go crazy. Then after that, go crazy. floor it a couple times. see if this helps
So this morning I had to come to work so I fired it up and again the bogging/stalling happens. I cant let it sit and idle because within seconds it stalls out, I have to keep gassing it. As I drive to work I notice slight improvements. The idle still gets super low, down to ~500 at times but then it spikes back up to ~1300 sometimes and it no longer stalls but the idle fluctuates between those points.
This screen shot shows my readings at idle once everything leveled off and stopped stalling out. Again the rpms still go as low as 500 and as high as 1300 bouncing around between those points but at least no stall outs.
50715
This shot shows my readings under some heavier load
50716
As stated before my car displays no codes however I decided to pull the log anyways and this is what I find. How the hell are cylinders misfiring now? I never touched them. Fuel line isnt kinked or anything.

I hate to sound redundant but... You almost certainly have a vacuum leak if you're misfiring on multiple cylinders and throwing P0171. Further, you're going to run lean under idle and have less issues while cruising. What are your vacuum readings while the engine is bogging?
If you have an in with a mechanic, try having them smoke test your intake. I'm sure the problem will pop up pretty quickly.
The problem could also be on the exhaust side, since that's where you were working more recently... If you have fresh air getting into the exhaust, it will also cause the O2 sensor to read leaner than normal. If you took the header off recently, did you remember to put the donut gasket back?
under idle while the engine is stuttering it reads ~20-23 in/Hg
I havn't messed with the header since install like a year ago. The gasket is there yes.
I did remove the intake air filter yesterday but Im sure its on securely, Ill double check it.
Just went out to the car and unplugged the battery again, gonna let it sit for a long time this time. I did also notice the tinniest gap between air filter/tubing so i repositioned it and tightened it down. Let's see...
Battery was pulled for 2 hours and tightened down the intake but same problem when I fired it up again, but the stalling out has started back up. So it wont idle again unless I give it gas
Focus_Sh1ft
05-09-2013, 04:54 PM
You didn't run the car at any point with the O2 sensor in still, but unplugged, did you? Doing so will ruin the sensor VERY quickly. Out of curiosity, how did you wire up the wideband? Anything else you messed with recently?
Step by step what I did is:
-unplug battery
-unplug stock a/f sensor
-cover stock sensor with supplied protector from AEM and place gently on pass seat
-screw in AEM wideband sensor and plug into AEM gauge and wired gauge up to power/ground
-reconnect battery
-fired up car and immediately saw what I was doing wrong, the car threw a lean code and the AEM a/f gauge showed the ratio spiking all the way up to 19s
-Realized that I was causing a problem by removing the stock sensor and leaving the ecu
harness unplugged
-unplugged battery
-removed all the AEM equipment and replaced the stock sensor
-plugged stock sensor back in
-plugged battery back up
-fired it up and it started bogging and misfiring and stalling out
So on my commute home finally my CEL came on and these are the codes now:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/Mistabigstuff19/2013-05-09184319_zps6baf5266.png
Its no longer reading cylinder 1 or 3 misfires like before but it still sputters. It also doesn't fluctuate at idle as much either. It kinda stays around 950-1100 with AC on and around 550-700 with AC off.
Here are my readings at idle

P0101 is the code that everyone throws when they install a new intake improperly/seat the maf improperly... Unless you actually have maf problems, which is unlikely. I'd try reconnecting the maf connector just in case. I know you haven't really touched anything on the intake side, but I'm still leaning towards a leak, and P0101 further supports that idea.
Since I didn't really mess with much where should I look for the vacuum leak? Is there a test I can conduct myself similar to the smoke test. I know you boosted guys use compressed air to test seals. How detrimemtal to my engines life is daily driving it right now?

It really depends on how bad you're misfiring. It seems like during normal driving it isn't too bad, which suggests a fairly small leak since you're only seeing problems during idle. Obviously, it should still be fixed asap.
You could build a boost leak tester which would serve the same purpose to find a vacuum leak. You can get all the parts you need from Home Depot on the cheap. I'll see if I can find the guide I used to build mine...
Smoke machines are quicker and more thorough though.
Ok thanks! Is a "smoke" test common practice? I typically do my maint at my boys shop which is a full service shop but it's no toyota or aftermarket installer, I just dont know if he would have the means to do that.

Yes, very common. That should be the first step to diagnose a vacuum leak by any competent mechanic. Basically they put a plug in your PCV port on the intake and throw a bunch of smoke in the intake. Smoke will come out of any leaks that you may have.
ok Ill see if I can take it over to him. Thanks for all your help man.
Great success!!! I really was sick of my idle/lean issues so I decided to take apart my almost entire breathing cycle and reinstall and found a couple pain points. Removed the air intake and throttle body, took off my header, removed and reinstalled the a/f sensor and this is what I found:
-the coupler attaching piping to TB had a large crack running down each side
-the vacuum line had a hole in the portion facing downward
-cleaned a ton of soot off the header/exhaust donut
-Extremely tight A/f (stock one I was able to unscrew by hand)
After replacing the coupler and cutting myself a new vacuum line, replacing everything, cleaning the donut, and loosening the sensor, I fire it up and let it idle. Immediately I notice how smooth it runs. Pull my OBDII reader and clear my CEL. Re run the code pull and get the always delightful "there are no fault codes stored on the ecu" message. Snap shot some of my readings and notice revs right where I want them and the afr back to ~13s-14s. Thanks again to Focus and Derrick you guys convinced me not to give up that it was a vacuum leak and I seem to have found it. Not sure why it never popped up til I started messing with the a/f sensor but I am much happier lol.

Hell yeah!!! I was talking to my boy Eddy at work about that and he said it might of been a problem with the Throttle Body or the case of the leakage. Awesome as hell you got the problem solved!!

Cars do that.. Once you start playing with thier insides they get all pissy and start making leaks where you never touched before just to piss you off.

Rear: 16x9.5 +17 optional 3mm spacer and 195/45/16
