Get in touch with ArmstrongRacing if you want parts for a gearbox build. He's in the process of liquidating the last of his stuff, you might be able to get a deal on some of it. Can't recall if he has a C50 LSD or not...

Ah, I didn't know he had extra parts. I figured he would have only had the parts to build the 6-speed. Interesting.

Haha. Will do. I rarely drive like that - at least that fast - though I do accelerate hard. It was sort of a onetime deal to show you fellas what the car is capable of.

Man, you have built such a clean car. Swap, turbo, sure, but there's so much more there than that. I really appreciate it and it looks like an absolute riot to drive. Hat's off to you.

As for posting publicly on YouTube, there are high profile automotive channels with literally millions of followers that break the speed limit in nearly every video. Safe than sorry is usually my motto but I just can't imagine anything bad would come of it. The chances are slim to none, imho.

Don't be so sure. A couple of years ago someone posted a video of himself speeding around the circumference of Manhattan. He lapped the entire island in 24 minutes, so of course he had to brag about it on the net. Well the NYPD didn't like that and managed to track him down and arrest him. Lesson to be learned, "Don't confess to crimes on the internet."

Thanks gents for the opinions. I guess the only true and guaranteed approach would be to remove the video even if the risks are minimal. Unfortunately there are no race tracks closeby at which I could take a video to share.

I don't think we're talking apples to apples with that NYC video. Even if it were, to the contrary, I can post a list of links to extremely popular automotive YouTube channels (millions of subscribers and even more views) that regularly show the speedo going well over 55 --where nothing has come of it.

Again, I'm usually the safe over sorry guy and agree with you both that the only guaranteed approach would be to remove it, but if we are going to talk real-world odds, I just can't fathom anything serious coming from posting a little backwoods hoon vid. You didn't tag the video to your city, your local law enforcement probably aren't as keen to domestic surveillance as the state agents of the NYPD and this video won't be nearly as high profile.

Either way, I've seen the video so I'm a happy camper lol.

Haha, well we're definitely not talking "Big Apple(s)" here. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I think you are right, ern-diz, that it's unlikely anything would come of it. Far more active owners there than here so If you're looking for more Yaris in your life and don't want to deal with all that is Facebook, I suggest giving the Gram a look-see.

Apologies for the thread derailment, now back to your regularly scheduled lovely boosted and swapped Yaris...

Well, thanks ern-diz! For sure there were a lot of modifications, but I'd hate to think what a mess I would have been in building a scratch kit. To tell you the truth, I almost did. Some guy was selling both a turbokits 2zr manifold and downpipe on eBay - the two really essential parts. I could have built the rest of the kit from parts online. But, more time would be needed for fabrication, plus I wouldn't have had all the invaluable tech support.

What do you guys think about running this 5W40 in the ol' turbo Yaris?

I was shopping around for a VW spec oil and stumbled upon this at my local Walmart. I don't think this oil is even available in the USA. And, $19.97 Canadian!!!

Annual Maintenance Checkup

After a couple days of hooning around in the Yaris, I decided it was time to lift the car and check all the various systems. I'm getting the car ready for storage. I probably have about 2 - 3 weeks left before the first of the evil road salt is applied. The cooler weather has been awesome for boost, with intake temps in the low 60s F.

I checked the following:

1) turbo manifold to head stud nuts - one missing! I took one off my 1nz engine in my other garage bay. Pic below.

2) turbo to turbo manifold stud nuts - all in place and tight

3) Downpipe to turbo turbine stud nuts - all tight, no leaks at gasket.

4) Transmission cooler circuit - no leaks, no chafing, added one piece of split hose between the trans return line and the oil pan lip. There was no visible wear on the hose. Pic below

5) water injection system - all hoses good, no chafing, no leaks, clamps and fasteners all solid. Removed the nozzle from the charge pipe to check the spray pattern.

6) All added wiring harnesses and relays - no issues

7) Turbo charge piping, 3" intake and cone filter, oil supply and oil drain - no body contact, couplers and T-clamps in excellent shape, no leaks, cracks.

8) bellhousing and flex plate bolts - all good.

9) exhaust system - all good

10) brakes - all good. I replaced both front calipers this summer.

11) Coilover threads cleaned and re-lubed, spring perches tight.

12) Full undercoating and rustproof spray. The car has a nice black coat of rustproofing underneath. It only takes about 2 cans to touch up each fall.

The car has been driven a lot and the only repair required is the above mentioned manifold stud nut. Not too bad for the complexity and number of added systems.

Well, it's been ages since I did an update. Not sure if anyone will see this, or care, but figured I'd update the thread.

The car has been running great with a less than perfect tune, but I've driven it more this summer and I ever have in the past. Still planning on eventually getting a standalone ECU - maybe next summer.

New exhaust looks rad. Can't wait to see installed pics on the setup. A few dual tip installs done here millennia ago, but I believe this will be the first that is actually two seperate mufflers rather than just a tip branch off of the tailpipe.

Hey bro! Haha. New exhaust should be cool, hopefully not too loud. Should have gone for two 3" tips instead of 4", but hey, we'll see. I have an appointment today for the exhaust guy to 'loose fit' the parts and take measurements. He already said the job can be done, but wants to mock it up first. Probably about 2 weeks before he can actually do it though. :(

Loving the new place. Move was the best thing we could have done, though I severely miss my 2 car garage. I have a single car garage now. Had to literally shorten the handles on my floor jacks to get them perpendicular to the car. Bummer. Lol. But, yeah, living in a city again has major benefits. Kids are thrilled.

How are things with you?

Life is too rapidly moving along, but otherwise pretty damn good. Don't know how much longer the old girl is going to be with me. Rust is making its claim.

If it were me, I'd be definitely missing the big garage as well as access to Fundy. Kayaking with whales and porpoises would be a form of Utopia for us. If our stage of life had been slightly different, we quite possibly would have been putting in an offer on your old place.

I'll tell you what, it's really beginning to suck being one of only a handful of truly active OGs on here.

Yeah , it is a beautiful area, but we needed a change and the city offers so much more for the kids in terms of friendships, activities. Eric got a new bike and has already worn out two rear tires. Our daughter is enjoying a very bountiful social life. Such a vast improvement from the rural 'small town' scene.

Yes, I have been checking in on YW and it does appear to be just hanging on; a shadow of its former glory from not that long ago. Truly sad, and I hope that it doesn't go offline as a vast resource would be lost.

I'm going to try and post more. I don't find FB or Instagram very helpful. Neither have any meat to them from my experience.

Hey man! Thanks! Actually, they're about 1 cm from the bumper, although they look like they're touching. So far, no evidence of melting or heat damage. It's funny...about 70% of the exhaust comes out of the right tip. It can be quite warm after a boost, whereas the left side, you could keep your hand on it.

I'm guessing that the two mufflers' piping are not equal length from the Y and/or one's straighter than the other.
I wonder if you should install a flap in line which closes the right exhaust, until you hit higher RPM? I've seen it on BMWs and even Toyota Camry, where the straighter pipe exhaust has a flap that opens and closes depending on the RPM. I guess it's the remedy for "Back Pressure", but your turbo don't need that.

Yes, you are correct in your description of the current configuration. It doesn't cause any issues that I am aware of, so I likely won't do anything more to it. Interesting info on the flap system. I plan to read on that a bit. Thanks!

Couldn't agree more. I've been wanting a manual for a while. I just have to get more motivated to do all the necessary work. New ECU, wiring, master cylinder, pedals, mounts and on and on... Haha. The car is working great, but a manual would definitely be the icing on the cake.

Great to hear, looking forward to see how much hp after your next tune...
I'm still debating if I should get the ecumaster before I go dyno tune it. They charge 800$, don't want to go more than twice there; once for stock internal tune, 2nd time if if I ever decide to build a forged internal motor.
Still having issues with my tune, it was fine until I unplugged the battery last week, and now, none of .cal files seems to be running good.
Nonetheless I'm still going to keep this yaris project going, I've found another yaris rs, with no rust for 1100, two summers ago, and a c60 transmission from the scrap yard.

Looooong time no talk. How are things? Been enjoying my car this summer. More driving than wrenching. haha. I received my dongle a couple of days ago. It unlocks ECU Flash so that I can have my remote stock ECU tuning session with dynocenterpr. A buddy of mine from Instagram has been after me for a while to do this. He had his boosted xD stock ECU tuned and I guess it's great. He had all kinds of issues with the F/IC and had this guy tune it. Guess it runs like stock, but nice and rich in boost. He's running 9.5 psi and a friend of his 13 psi on the stock 2zr with zero issues apparently. Check out:

He had his boosted xD stock ECU tuned and I guess it's great. He had all kinds of issues with the F/IC and had this guy tune it. Guess it runs like stock, but nice and rich in boost. He's running 9.5 psi and a friend of his 13 psi on the stock 2zr with zero issues apparently. Check out:

Great news, nice to hear from you. I've been busy, still daily driving the rusty turbo project, I'm overdue for a real tune, I might try them, it seems like the best solution! Let me know how the remote tuning session goes.

How has your summer driving experience been with the turbo project, and are you considering the remote tuning session with dynocenterpr for your boosted xD? Also, for those intrigued, can you share more about the dongle and its role in unlocking ECU Flash for remote tuning sessions?

Sounds like a really fun (and ambitious) project, and you’ve clearly done more homework than most people who jump into a turbo build. The 2ZR should handle 6–7 psi just fine with a safe tune, especially since the Lotus runs boost from the factory. The biggest things I’d keep in mind are heat management around the turbo (blankets, shielding, protecting ECU and lines), plus making sure the fueling is solid—an upgraded pump (DW200/Walbro etc.) is cheap insurance compared to risking a lean condition.

The auto trans is the other weak point. While the U340/341 can live around 220–230 hp if treated gently, I’d absolutely consider a cooler to extend its life, and stick to the respectful driving style you mentioned. With good fueling, conservative tuning on the FIC, and proper oil/heat monitoring, you’re setting yourself up for a reliable low-boost setup. Looking forward to seeing progress once you can get the car into the garage.
