Looking/ Wanting to join the club. Which one to buy?

hello,

located in western canada

i need to get a reliable, fuel efficient, small car.
hoping to spend less then $5000 (potentially i could spend more, but not really interested to)
hoping it will last 5+'ish years
95% city driving

i have been surfing/ scanning though kijiji and autotrader for what is currently on offer
cross referencing, reading, researching with google, trying to learn what i can

sedan vs hatchback?
auto vs manual?

my height is always an issue as to which vehicle i can actually fit into and able to access the pedals. i do fit into a hatchback and still looking for a sedan to try out for size. either vehicle i suspect i will need to move the seat back. i have never owned an automatic, but im older now and feel lazier to shift. not sure if i can actually shift with the seats in stock position. i suspect the climate control dials on the sedan to be an obstruction.

hmm, its turning into a longer post then desired..

what sort of mileage vehicles should i be looking at?
gen 2 or gen 3?
