Switching to reverse problem
hi,
i have a problem. almost every time i switch to reverse, there is this sound coming from under the hood like all the gears are getting messed up. don't know if you understand me, but it is almost the same sound as if you try to switch gear while driving and you didn't press the clutch all the way to the ground. i don't know what it is, but it's not very nice to hear. does it ever happen to you guys? |

Keep in mind that the reverse gear is not synchronised. So, a a bit of finess and common sense is prudent when accessing reverse.
BTW, most other cars do no have synchros in reverse gear either. |

No it doesn't happen anymore, maybe once or twice when I first got the car and wasn't used to it yet. On my Yaris, you *really* have to have your left foot *all the way* down when you switch gears (even a millimeter or two can make a difference) and when you switch to reverse you have to push a little harder than the other gears and it's not as comfortable and intuitive. It should go in smoothly though. You'll get used to it. |

Try shifting to 2nd before you shift to reverse and you'll never hear grinding again.

I love momentum.

It's normal, almost all manual transmissions cars make some amount of noise going into reverse.
As others have suggested, shift to 2nd gear, then reverse. |

+1 every manual car Ive driven for the most part was a little sticky when going into reverse. And Ive driven a lot of manual cars probably more than most. Used to work at a dealer having to move around cars and park them on the lot.

try putting a cold Getrag into reverse. It'll make your Yaris feel like butter.
As many state....perfectly normal for a manual gearbox and double clutching or forward gear selection will help. |
